This position performs specialized professional environmental work, including research on environmental radiation on lands to be mined and on lands reclaimed after mining. The incumbent conducts environmental radiological surveillance to determine the impact of phosphate mining and makes determinations concerning Chapter 64E‑5 of the Florida Administrative Code. Responsibilities Collect environmental samples and perform field evaluations on lands related to phosphate mining projects. Distribute and collect area monitors to determine natural radiation enhancement in mined areas. Collect and prepare soil and water samples and conduct soil characterizations. Perform gamma surveys. Prepare and maintain field monitoring equipment and devices. Prepare reports on mining operations and on sampling and surveying activities. Serve as a member of Florida's radiological emergency response team. Provide 24‑hour availability for response to radiation emergencies, including emergency duty in special needs or Red Cross shelters. Monitor compliance with Sections 215.422 and 112.061 of the Florida Statutes and Chapter 691‑24.001 of the Florida Administrative Code. Maintain regulatory responsibilities in accordance with Chapter 60L‑36.003 of the Florida Administrative Code. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of radiation. Qualifications Minimum Valid Florida driver’s license; ability to use state or county vehicles for official duties. Ability to lift 60 pounds of equipment. Willingness to work before, during, and/or beyond normal hours in the event of an emergency. Current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship. Attendance of all required core training courses and a minimum 70% score on each written exam of the required core training modules. Security background check, drug screening, and participation in direct deposit. Completion of Form I‑9 and verification through the E‑Verify system. Preferred Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in chemistry, physics, health physics (radiation related), nuclear medicine technology, or similar field. Four years of relevant experience. Federal certification in mammography inspections (MQSA) if deemed necessary. Travel, Physical, and Other Requirements Travel in‑state and out‑of‑state for job activities, meetings, conferences, and training. Work may occur in the field or in office daily. Emergency duty may require travel and work outside normal business hours. Must be able to respond to emergencies from residence. Benefits Annual and sick leave benefits.
