Registered Nurse - Operating Room

Part‑Time Evenings10:30a‑7:00pm At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse and experienced clinician functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner’s model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts assessments, assists with exams and treatments, provides patient education, and maintains medical records. The RN II delivers efficient and effective direct patient care, including complex needs, and collaborates with physicians and interprofessional teams to coordinate compassionate, quality care and achieve desired outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence in care, technology use, medication administration, procedures, emergency management, and patient advocacy. The RN II assumes progressive leadership roles such as participating in unit or hospital initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor, and contributing to hospital-wide projects. FLSA Status Non‑exempt Qualifications Graduate of an approved education program for the required credential. Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment. Licensed RN in Texas, with Texas Board of Nursing PSV Compact Licensure, and must obtain a permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Certified Instructor (AHA). Preferred: Magnet‑Recognized Certification (ANCC). Preferred: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Certified Instructor (AHA). Proficient in English (speaking, reading, writing). Excellent communication with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers. Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Independence and judgment in interactions with the care team. Critical thinking and clinical judgment per Nurse Practice Act. Time‑management skills. Contribution to Clinical Career Path program. Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Use therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional team. Contribute to teamwork by offering assistance, fostering healthy workplace relationships, providing guidance, and seeking feedback to improve outcomes. Implement staff education and mentor staff and students, including preceptorship; promote accountability to improve unit scorecard metrics. Service Essential Functions Follow patient and family‑centered care standards; conduct assessments, attend exams, and maintain records. Develop, update, and communicate care plans, discharge planning, and coordinate with the care team using the nursing process. Provide patient teaching, adapt methods, and plan for post‑discharge care. Drive improvement of patient satisfaction scores via accountability. Quality & Safety Essential Functions Apply nursing process standards and professional regulations. Identify practice improvement areas with evidence‑based research to meet core measures and safety outcomes. Provide and adjust care for complex patients, coordinate with the team, and document accurately. Improve quality and safety scores on the unit scorecard through accountability and reporting. Finance Essential Functions Self‑motivation to manage time and documentation, minimize overtime, and prioritize tasks. Contribute to unit resource utilization and financial targets by reducing length of stay and enhancing efficiency. Champion new care pathways and service line implementations; support initiatives and present findings.
