About the Position The Los Angeles Family Law Act (LAFLA) is a nonprofit law firm that protects and advances the rights of the underserved, ensuring that everyone can have access to the justice system. With more than 200 employees, including more than 100 attorneys, LAFLA provides free civil legal services and resources in areas such as housing, public benefits, domestic violence, and family advocacy. The Santa Monica Workgroup serves residents for 30 years and coordinates with community organizations to deliver holistic advocacy. LAFLA is currently seeking a Managing Attorney to lead the Santa Monica office and the Domestic Violence Clinic. Qualifications Active membership in the California State Bar. Minimum five (5) years’ experience in lawyering, including client interviewing, legal research, writing, drafting, negotiation, law and motion, discovery, trial, and appellate work. Demonstrated knowledge of applicable law and community legal needs. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail. Experience handling direct service cases and complex impact cases. Experience with administrative duties and supervision of attorneys. Preferred: experience in a legal services program and with grants. Strong people skills and ability to maintain positive relations with a diverse population. Willingness to work beyond a minimum 7.5‑hour day when needed. Examples of Duties Supervise attorneys and other staff, managing the Santa Monica office and the Domestic Violence Clinic. Lead efforts to achieve full Right to Counsel for Santa Monica tenants facing eviction. Maintain an active caseload whenever possible and review all retained cases regularly. Coordinate clinic schedules and provide coverage when necessary. Collaborate with the Development department on resource development and grant management, and draft quarterly reports to the City of Santa Monica. Identify and pursue additional grants and funding opportunities. Ensure proper maintenance of case files and time records. Oversee smooth office operations and cooperate with other Managing Attorneys. Liaise with the City of Santa Monica, client communities, and community organizations. Implement LAFLA’s Performance Standards and contribute to the management team’s development of client‑friendly delivery systems. Coordinate intake and service delivery methods with Self‑Help partners and court administrative staff. Encourage staff to develop specialized knowledge in multiple substantive areas of poverty law. Ensure legal services align with LAFLA’s priorities, policies, and procedures, maximizing office resources for client service.
