Brief Job Description
The SSLC Medical Director manages, coordinates, and directs all medical services, including psychiatric, dental, pharmaceutical, and laboratory work, at the State Supported Living Centers. The Director ensures high‑quality medical care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities served by the SSLCs and oversees diagnoses and treatment for complex medical, psychiatric, and behavioral health needs.
Essential Job Functions
- Attend work regularly and comply with various shift schedules, including rotating and overtime, per agency leave policy.
- Serve on an on‑call rotating schedule as required by facility operations.
- Ensure high‑quality medical services are delivered in accordance with accepted medical practices.
- Direct diagnoses, treatments, and specialized medical procedures for assigned caseloads.
- Lead, plan, assign, and supervise daily activities of the medical department.
- Hire, train, and promote professional growth of department staff to maintain a competent workforce.
- Ensure staff compliance with agency and facility training standards and conduct performance evaluations.
- Develop, implement, and monitor performance plans to meet DOJ Settlement Agreement requirements and participate in survey and audit processes.
- Participate in committees such as the Executive Team, QA/QI Council, Incident Management Review Team, and Administrative Death Review Team.
- Lead interdisciplinary planning conferences and provide medical information to families and authorized representatives.
- Promote safety and wellbeing of staff and provide treatment to employees injured in the course of employment.
- Assist with disaster response, recovery, or COOP activation as needed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of general medical methods, care plans, and ICF‑IID standards.
- Knowledge of medical jurisprudence and HHSC policies.
- Skill in patient care, diagnostic tools, and treatment equipment.
- Skill in problem analysis, plan formulation, and leading change with measurable outcomes.
- Ability to supervise, direct medical activities, diagnose, interpret lab results, and prepare medical records.
- Ability to evaluate patients and coordinate treatment with interdisciplinary personnel.
- Ability to manage the Medical Services division and evaluate staff performance.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Commitment to maintaining required continuing medical education.
Registrations, Licensure & Certifications
- Licensed as a medical doctor by the State of Texas.
- Current DEA registration certificate.
- National Provider Identifier (NPI) and enrollment as Medicaid and Medicare Part B provider.
Initial Screening Criteria
- Graduation from an accredited medical or osteopathic program.
- Leadership or management experience.
- Clinical experience.
- Residency training.
Additional Requirements
- Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and LEIE).
- Males 18–25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
- All State Supported Living Center employees must undergo random drug testing.
- Flexibility in work hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays may be required.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
