Acute Care Medical/Surgical Social Worker

The Acute Care Medical/Surgical Social Worker functions as a key member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, providing professional social work services to Veterans and their families within the acute medical/surgical inpatient setting at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI. They are responsible for comprehensive psychosocial assessments, treatment planning, crisis intervention, discharge planning, and coordination of care. The social worker addresses the complex needs of patients facing acute illness, hospitalization, and related challenges, ensuring that the psychosocial, emotional, and resource needs of Veterans are identified and addressed. They collaborate closely with optimize resources, and promote continuity of care following discharge.

Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of mental health or other Social Work-related settings, (VA or non-VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. To practice independently in this position, the Social Worker has an independent clinical Social Work license from the state. If hired with less than one year of post graduate degree experience or without a license or certification, the Social Worker would be considered for promotion after obtaining certification or licensure at the independent practice level. A doctoral degree in Social Work may not be substituted for the the master's degree in social work. This can be substituted for the required one year of professional Social Work experience in a clinical setting. Individuals assigned as GS-11 Social Workers are at the full performance level. A GS-11 Social worker has a Master of Social Work Degree granted by a graduate program fully accredited by the council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm with rotating weekends and holidays.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
