Position Summary

The School Age Teacher plans and delivers safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate care and enrichment for children ages 5–12 in before-school, after-school, and school-holiday/summer programming. This role fosters a supportive, respectful classroom culture aligned with the Children's Lighthouse BRIGHT® curriculum and xSTREAM Quest® enrichment framework, while maintaining full compliance with Texas Health and Human Services Chapter 746 Minimum Standards for licensed child-care centers. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

•        Plan and implement daily lesson plans and activities aligned with xSTREAM Quest® enrichment (STEM, arts, literacy, and physical activity). 

•        Supervise children at all times, including transitions, transportation to/from partner schools, homework support, snack, and outdoor/gross-motor play, maintaining required staff-to-child ratios per Chapter 746. 

•        Create a classroom environment that supports self-directed learning, positive peer relationships, and appropriate behavior guidance using CLASS®-aligned interaction strategies. 

•        Communicate professionally and regularly with families regarding their child's day, progress, and any incidents, in partnership with the Center Director. 

•        Maintain accurate attendance, sign-in/sign-out, incident, and daily activity records in compliance with licensing and center policy. 

•        Conduct and document required health checks, safety checks, and emergency drills (fire, severe weather, lockdown) as scheduled. 

•        Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom, including routine sanitation of toys, materials, and surfaces per licensing standards. 

•        Escort and supervise children during school pick-up routes as assigned, ensuring accurate roster verification and safe transportation practices. 

•        Participate in required initial, annual, and ongoing training hours as mandated by Chapter 746 and center policy. 

•        Collaborate with the Center Director and fellow teaching staff to support center-wide events, curriculum nights, and accreditation initiatives. 

•        Perform other duties as assigned by the Center Director. 

Minimum Qualifications

•        Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED. 

•        Meets all Chapter 746 caregiver qualification requirements, including background check clearance and pre-service orientation prior to unsupervised contact with children. 

•        CPR and Pediatric First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire). 

•        Prior experience working with school-age children in a licensed child-care, camp, or school setting preferred. 

•        CDA credential (School-Age or Preschool endorsement) or coursework toward a CDA/degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Education, or related field preferred, but not required at entry level. 

•        Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with children ages 5–12 and communicate effectively with families. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•        Working knowledge of, or willingness to be trained in, child development principles for the school-age years. 

•        Strong verbal and written communication skills. 

•        Ability to manage a group of children independently and respond calmly and appropriately to behavioral and emergency situations. 

•        Reliable, punctual, and able to work a schedule that includes before-school and/or after-school hours, plus full days during school holidays and summer break. 

•        Basic proficiency with attendance and communication technology used by the center (e.g., tablet-based check-in, family communication app). 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

•        Ability to actively supervise children in both indoor and outdoor settings in varying weather conditions. 

•        Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds. 

•        Ability to sit, kneel, bend, stand, and move quickly for extended periods to actively engage with and supervise children. 

•        Ability to walk children safely to and from partner schools, including outdoor routes. 

•        Regular exposure to a classroom/child-care environment; adherence to all health, safety, and sanitation protocols. 

Compliance

This position is governed by Texas Health and Human Services Chapter 746 Minimum Standards for Child-Care Centers. Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining all required background check clearances, immunization/health documentation, and annual training hours.
