Carpenter I Position

Patton State Hospital, Human Resources Department, is accepting applications for at least (1) Permanent, Full-Time appointment to the Carpenter I position. This vacancy exists in the Facility Operations Department and is under the direction of the Carpenter Supervisor. Carpenters shall be responsible for carpentry duties hospital wide.

Under the direction of the Carpenter Supervisor, the Carpenter I performs skilled carpentry work in the maintenance repair, alteration, and construction of hospital buildings, structures, and equipment. The incumbent repairs and replaces doors, windows, hardware, partitions, ceilings, flooring, baseboards, roofing, fencing, and other building components. Duties may also include concrete work, glass replacement, and the assembly and repair of patient-related activity equipment.

The Carpenter constructs and repairs framework, walls, and other structural components using a variety of hand and power tools and works from blueprint, plans, specifications, sketches, and written or verbal instructions. The incumbent estimates materials needed to complete assigned projects, prepares purchase requests for lumber, hardware, and other supplies, and maintains accurate shop records and daily time sheets.

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required to operate a State owned or leased vehicle.

ABILITY TO:

Bend; reach; ascent stairs, slopes and inclines; work at heights applicable to trade demands; and labor in the outdoors in all weather conditions. Produce both rough and finished carpentry, use hand and power carpentry tools, read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; work from blueprints and interpret plans and specifications; recognize lumber grades and types; keep records and make simple reports; prepare rough sketches of carpentry work; and make estimates of material and labor; follow oral and written instructions; instruct and lead unskilled assistants.

• Operate automotive equipment and haul materials using state vehicles and vessels.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Principles, methods, materials tools, and equipment used in carpentry; Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety applicable to Carpentry; and Building codes.

The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

All completed applications submitted by each cut-off-date will be reviewed at that time. Note: Applications may be processed on a flow basis prior to the cutoff-date to meet the hiring needs of the department. All applicants may be pre-screened for breadth and depth of experience. Only the most qualified applicants may be interviewed based on screening criteria.
