Radiology Technologist - Cardiac Cath Lab

Major Responsibilities Provide competent, proficient, technical support during diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures, implementing procedural standards and protocols. Function as scrub assistant, circulator, and monitor technician on a rotating basis during procedures; assist physicians with complex interventional devices, including intra‑aortic balloon pump. Collect, analyze, and interpret hemodynamic and oximetric data. Anticipate needs of scrub team for sterile supplies, equipment connection, and operation. Observe sterile technique when prepping, scrubbing, draping, assisting, and circulating. Process digital imaging: title and label properly, demonstrate ability to view and transfer images. Demonstrate competence in the operation of imaging, physiological monitoring, and related equipment; perform basic troubleshooting. Demonstrate competence in decentralized lab testing, assuming responsibility for QA proficiency testing. Administer medication in accordance with medication administration policy. Perform road‑mapping, call‑up of interventional studies, and assist with vascular software processing and procedural table set‑up during peripheral studies. Communicate and collaborate with physicians, managers, support personnel, and staff regarding technical issues to ensure reliability of results and quality assurance in imaging, hemodynamics, and oximetry. Provide patient care specific to procedural requirements and patient needs under supervision of physicians and Cath Lab nursing personnel within established departmental policies for scope of practice. Perform basic patient assessment and preparation for procedures: monitor vital signs, heart rate/rhythm, O₂ saturation, LOC; obtain pertinent patient medical information and enter in point‑of‑care system or procedural record pre‑ and post‑procedure; monitor arterial and venous lines; perform CPR, defibrillation, and cardioversion as necessary; perform venipuncture for IV therapy; rotate as qualified observer; administer IA medications under direct physician supervision. Provide for patient comfort and safety within procedural parameters. Document procedural events chronologically in the procedural record (Quinton System) and complete database forms with physician input. Perform post‑procedure ACT determination, sheath removal, and hemostasis according to established protocol; assist with adoption of hemostatic devices. Assist with transport of monitored patients to nursing units; address special needs and behaviors of specific age groups. Participate in developing and revising policy and procedures. Provide support and education to patients, families and other healthcare team members: assess learning needs, document patient teaching, recognize needs/behaviors of varied age groups, precept first‑year Cardiology Fellows and new technologists, present in‑services on technical skill enhancement, radiation safety, image quality, QA and hemostasis techniques, act as a resource for imaging and hemostasis techniques. Maintain a safe, organized and efficient work environment: comply with radiation safety, OSHA, and infection control standards; maintain equipment quality control; identify equipment and supply needs; keep work areas clean; remove malfunctioning equipment; assist with inventory processing; perform fluoro benchmark phantom imaging for QA monitoring; perform dosimetry checks. Interact and cooperate with all customers: meet anticipated customer needs clinically and non‑clinically; role‑model supportive teamwork; support open communication among the healthcare team. Maintain professional growth, self‑development objectives, and skill enhancement: assess own educational needs, plan and implement strategies; attend one local CV conference annually. Demonstrate commitment to the organization: act independently in routine decisions; demonstrate adaptability and flexibility for change; demonstrate reliability regarding attendance and punctuality; demonstrate cost‑effective measures; maintain mandatory education requirements; actively participate in staff meetings and in‑services; assist with policy development; participate in CQI projects; provide recommendations on capital equipment acquisition. Education / Experience Required Graduate of an accredited School of Radiology. Employee must pass the RT Boards (Registry Exam) within 6 months of graduation. Typically requires 2 years of experience in an Interventional Radiology and/or Cath Lab Tech role. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Intermediate computer skills, film‑processing skills, hemodynamic interpretation skills, basic patient assessment skills, IV therapy skills; new graduates will receive education to acquire these skills. Knowledge of radiographic imaging and radiation safety. Current RT license in the State of Illinois and current AART registry. BCLS certification. Physiologic Requirements and Working Conditions Ability to work staggered 10‑hour shifts, take call, work under stressful conditions and difficult situations. Exposed to blood and body fluids; exposed to radiation. Ability to assist patients in transfer, perform lifting, pulling, pushing related to patient positioning/transfer and stocking of supplies. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; patient lifts over 35 pounds require patient handling equipment and at least one other associate when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case‑by‑case basis. This job description indicates the general nature and level of work expected of the incumbent.
