Medical Technologist

Summary

Under general supervision, the Un-Registered Medical Technologist performs a wide variety of routine and specialized studies on blood, urine, and body fluid specimens as requisitioned by a physician. Testing is conducted in accordance with established standards and practices to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The role requires independent judgment, appropriate professional education, and certification eligibility. The incumbent assists the Laboratory Supervisor with day-to-day departmental operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Consult with and keep the supervisor informed of activities, needs, and problems.
• Work in a specific laboratory department or rotate through a minimum of two up to all laboratory departments.
• Serve as charge person in the absence of the department supervisor, as assigned.
• Establish work plans and priorities to ensure timely completion of assigned duties in compliance with policies and standards.
• Comply with all established laboratory standards, practices, and procedures.
• Assemble supplies and equipment; ensure proper function, cleanliness, and organization of work areas.
• Ensure specimens are properly labeled, collected, received, stored, and ultimately discarded according to policy.
• Record, review, certify, and report test results as required.
• Maintain quality control procedures for instruments, reagents, and testing processes.
• Identify instrument malfunctions or out-of-control results and take appropriate corrective action.
• Assist with the training and orientation of new employees.
• Adhere to all hospital, laboratory, departmental, and regulatory policies to ensure a safe work environment.
• Follow safe work practices and use required personal protective equipment.
• Demonstrate professionalism, respect, and courtesy to patients, families, visitors, and coworkers.
• Recognize and respect cultural diversity among all internal and external customers.
• Communicate effectively across differences in culture, values, beliefs, and age, utilizing interpreters when needed.

Minimum QualificationsRequired Qualifications

• Twelve (12) months of clinical education or training in a Medical Technology program or equivalent.
• Three (3) months of on-the-job training to gain proficiency with hospital policies, procedures, and job responsibilities.

Education & Certification

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related science.
  • If degree is in a related science, five (5) years of full-time acceptable clinical experience within the last ten (10) years is required in one or more of the following:
    • Blood Banking
    • Chemistry
    • Hematology
    • Immunology
    • Microbiology
  • At least two (2) years must be under the supervision of a pathologist (American Board of Pathology certified or eligible), an appropriately certified medical scientist, or a certified medical technologist.
• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology and ASCP eligibility (e.g., recent graduate awaiting MT exam).
• ASCP eligibility or certification from another acceptable certifying agency.

Pay Range:

$30.03-$44.11
