Job Title: Compliance Director– Regulated Medical Waste & Environmental Compliance
Position Summary
The Compliance Director provides hands-on leadership to direct regulatory compliance across all regulated medical waste (RMW) transportation, transfer, and processing operations. Working closely with Executive, Logistics, and Facility leadership, this role ensures the company maintains strict adherence to federal, state, and local requirements. The ideal candidate pairs deep expertise in RMW transporter and facility permitting with a comprehensive command of specialized wastes, including RMW (blood/body fluids, sharps, pathological, microbiological, animal waste, etc.), trace chemotherapy, hazardous/non-hazardous pharmaceuticals, and RCRA hazardous materials.
Key Responsibilities
Compliance, Safety, Auditing
- Waste Segregation: Direct strict point-of-use separation of all Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) biological streams from non-RMW chemical and pharmaceutical streams to maintain legal compliance, eliminate safety cross-contamination risks, and optimize facility disposal costs.
- Regulatory Adherence: Monitor and enforce compliance with federal and state standards set by OSHA and the EPA. Coordinate and support regulatory inspections, agency inquiries, permit applications, permit modifications, and corrective-action responses.
- OSHA Program Management: Oversee OSHA compliance programs, including Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communication, PPE, injury recordkeeping, LOTO, powered industrial trucks, emergency response, and employee training.
- Internal Audits: Conduct routine internal compliance audits of facilities, transportation practices, manifests, shipping documentation, training records, permits, and operating procedures.
- SOPs & Corrective Actions: Develop and standardize compliance policies, SOPs, inspection forms, and training programs; investigate compliance deficiencies and track corrective actions through closure.
- Subject Matter Expertise: Monitor regulatory changes and serve as the primary company resource for questions involving RMW transportation, waste acceptance, transfer, storage, treatment, and disposal.
Facility & Environmental Operations
- Facility Permitting: Maintain all permits, licenses, registrations, renewals, inspections, reporting requirements, and regulatory deadlines associated with transfer stations, treatment facilities, and processing operations.
- Stream-Specific Waste Oversight: Manage state-specific requirements governing infectious waste, biomedical waste, sharps, trace chemotherapy, pathological tissues, and both hazardous (RCRA) and non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste streams.
- Reporting & Deadlines: Maintain a centralized regulatory calendar and permit database; prepare and submit required federal, state, and local regulatory reports accurately and on time.
Transporter & Logistics Compliance
- Permit & License Management: Maintain and renew all required RMW transporter permits, registrations, authorizations, and licenses across all operating states and jurisdictions.
- Shipping Standards: Ensure total compliance with requirements for packaging, labeling, marking, documenting, handling, loading, transporting, transferring, storing, and delivering RMW.
- DOT Hazmat Oversight: Manage applicable DOT hazardous materials regulations for RMW and hazardous waste shipments, including shipping papers, packaging requirements, markings, labels, and employee training.
- Expansion Support: Support regulatory due diligence and compliance integration for company acquisitions and new market expansion.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in regulated medical waste, environmental services, healthcare waste, hazardous materials transportation, waste processing, or another highly regulated environmental industry.
- Technical Expertise: Strong working knowledge of RMW transporter permitting, DOT hazardous materials requirements, OSHA standards, state medical waste regulations, and RCRA hazardous waste generator classifications.
- Education (Preferred): Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field; or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification
Work Environment: Work from Home
Travel Requirements (25% travel): Must be able to travel to Cyntox facilities, transfer stations, offices, etc., for audits, meetings, and other work-related activities
