Licensed Clinician – Active-Duty Military & TRICARE

Position Summary

The Licensed Clinician provides high-quality outpatient psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, families, and groups within their scope of practice and in accordance with California law, ethical standards, and Wave Therapy policies.

This position will have a particular focus on serving Active-Duty Military members and their families through TRICARE insurance . Experience working with military populations is preferred, but clinicians with an interest in developing this area of practice are also encouraged to apply.

The clinician is responsible for maintaining an active California license in good standing, delivering evidence-based clinical care, completing accurate and timely clinical documentation, and contributing to a collaborative, professional treatment environment.

Licensed Clinicians are expected to exercise sound clinical judgment, maintain professional boundaries, protect client confidentiality, and uphold the mission and values of Wave Therapy while providing compassionate, client-centered care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Clinical Care:

• Provide outpatient psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, families, and groups within the clinician's scope of practice.
• Conduct clinical assessments and develop appropriate diagnoses and individualized treatment plans.
• Provide evidence-based, client-centered treatment based on each client's needs and treatment goals.
• Monitor client progress and adjust treatment plans and interventions as clinically appropriate.
• Assess and respond appropriately to safety concerns, including suicidal ideation, self-harm, abuse, neglect, and other high-risk situations.
• Coordinate care with other healthcare providers when clinically appropriate and authorized by the client.

Active-Duty Military & TRICARE Client Care:

• Provide psychotherapy services to Active-Duty Military members and, as appropriate, military spouses and families.
• Develop an understanding of the unique experiences and stressors that may affect military clients and their families, including deployment, reintegration, relocation, relationship and family stress, trauma, and the demands of military life.
• Follow applicable TRICARE requirements related to documentation, medical necessity, authorizations, referrals, and continuity of care.
• Maintain appropriate documentation to support services provided to TRICARE clients.
• Coordinate care with other healthcare providers when clinically appropriate and authorized by the client.
• Provide culturally responsive care that recognizes the unique experiences, structure, values, and demands associated with military life.

Documentation:

• Complete all required clinical documentation accurately, professionally, and within Wave Therapy's required timeframes.
• Maintain records that comply with California law, BBS requirements, HIPAA, insurance requirements, AI standards, and professional standards.
• Document assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and other required clinical records.
• Utilize approved AI technology to support clinical documentation when appropriate and when the client has provided consent.
• Maintain documentation sufficient to support medical necessity and insurance requirements.

Professional Responsibilities:

• Maintain an active California professional license in good standing.
• Adhere to the ethical codes and standards established by the applicable licensing board and professional association.
• Maintain required continuing education for license renewal.
• Carry professional liability insurance if required by Wave Therapy or applicable law.
• Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, consultations, and case conferences.
• Collaborate professionally with leadership and fellow clinicians to promote quality client care.
• Seek consultation when clinically appropriate.
• Maintain professional boundaries and conduct consistent with BBS ethical standards and Wave Therapy's standards of professionalism.
• Supervising associates with provide additional compensation.

Compliance:

• Comply with all federal, state, and local laws governing the practice of psychotherapy.
• Follow all Wave Therapy policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.
• Protect the confidentiality of client information in accordance with HIPAA and California privacy laws.
• Report suspected abuse, neglect, or other mandated reporting situations as required by law.
• Practice within the scope of the clinician's professional license and demonstrated areas of competence.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current California license in good standing according to the BBS or applicable California licensing board as one of the following:

  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
  • Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).
  • Licensed Psychologist.
• Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited institution in counseling, marriage and family therapy, social work, psychology, or a related behavioral health field.
• Demonstrated competency in providing psychotherapy services within the clinician's scope of practice.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and clinical documentation skills.
• Ability to establish therapeutic rapport with a diverse client population.
• Working knowledge of HIPAA, California mental health laws, mandated reporting requirements, and ethical practice standards.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
• Proficiency with electronic health records and telehealth platforms.
• Willingness and ability to provide psychotherapy services to Active-Duty Military members and their families.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with Active-Duty Military members, veterans, military spouses, or military families.
• Familiarity with TRICARE documentation, authorization, referral, and medical necessity requirements.
• Experience working in an outpatient private practice setting.
• Training in evidence-based treatment modalities such as CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR, IFS, EFT, or trauma-informed care.
• Experience with insurance documentation and medical necessity requirements.
• Experience working with trauma, relationship concerns, life transitions, anxiety, depression, or other concerns commonly encountered within military populations.
• Bilingual or multilingual skills.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to sit for extended periods while providing psychotherapy.
• Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through telehealth platforms.
• Ability to use computers and electronic medical record systems.
