Accounting Specialist II - Payroll

The City of Topeka is seeking a dedicated financial professional to join its Payroll team as an Accounting Specialist II. This position performs tasks related to the processing of salary and wage payments for employees. Responsibilities include auditing and reviewing time and leave records for compliance with established standards, computing and balancing wage and overtime payments, and verifying employee leave balances.

What you’ll do:

• Reconcile and verify leave accrual balances.
• Assist management and supervisory staff with employee personnel actions, including promotions, pay increases, expense accounting, and more.
• Assist employees and supervisors with questions and changes relating to electronic time recording, tax withholdings and direct deposit information.
• Research and prepare reports relating to payroll information.

The ideal candidate is:

• Highly organized and skilled in time management.
• A critical thinker with the ability to exercise sound judgment.
• Discreet in handling confidential information.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School diploma or its equivalent is required. College-level coursework in accounting is preferred.
• Five years of accounting, fiscal auditing or bookkeeping experience is required.

Entry rate of pay: $23.00 - $25.00 per hour, depending on qualifications
