Day to Day

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Candidate Capabilities team, you will provide senior technical leadership for the systems and services that power various candidate management capabilities. You'll own the design, implementation, and evolution of core services including candidate profile management systems, matching infrastructure, and Elasticsearch-based search capabilities that process millions of candidate submissions and power hiring decisions for employers worldwide.

In this role, you'll work at the intersection of multiple teams-partnering closely with product engineering, data science, and cross-functional partners to translate complex business requirements into scalable technical solutions. You'll drive end-to-end delivery of high-impact, cross-cutting initiatives while establishing engineering excellence through architecture reviews, mentorship, and involved implementation of the most complex technical challenges. You'll also advocate developer productivity improvements, evaluate and adopt emerging technologies (including AI/ML tooling), and ensure the reliability and performance of production systems that are critical to Indeed's mission of helping people get jobs.

Responsibilities

• Own the design, development, and evolution of complex systems, frameworks, or platforms.

• Drive technical decision-making, balancing short-term delivery with long-term maintainability and scalability.

• Architect new solutions, evaluate trade-offs, and validate ideas through prototyping, experimentation, or iteration on existing systems.

• Participate in and influence code and design reviews across teams to uphold high engineering standards.

• Identify performance, reliability, and scalability improvements and drive enhancements to existing systems.

• Mentor and guide other engineers, supporting technical growth and best practices across teams.

• Communicate clearly and effectively with engineers, product managers, and other business partners to align on technical direction and execution.

Skills/Competencies

• Requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and a minimum of 8 years of related experience; or a Master's degree with a minimum of 6 years of experience; or a PhD with 3 years experience

• Demonstrated proficiency in modern JVM languages (Java, Kotlin) and frameworks (Spring Boot), with demonstrated experience building and maintaining APIs and microservices architectures

• Solid understanding of data storage systems including NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, etc.), data modeling, and data integration patterns for high-volume systems

• Experience with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), observability platforms (Datadog, monitoring, alerting), and production operations best practices

• Experience with GraphQL, event-driven architectures, and search infrastructure technologies (e.g., Elasticsearch)

Salary Range Transparency

Tier 1 - United States of America $140,000 - 210,000 USD per year

Tier 2 - United States of America $155,000 - 233,000 USD per year

Tier 3 - United States of America $171,000 - 257,000 USD per year

Tier 4 - N/A

Tier 5 - United States of America $195,000 - 293,000 USD per year

Actual compensation will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, and expertise, as evaluated during the interview process.
