Site Safety And Health Officer (SSHO)

Medcor Safety, a subsidiary of Medcor, is seeking an experienced Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) for a short-term construction project in Tomah, Wisconsin.

This opportunity offers competitive hourly compensation, a generous weekly per diem, and a four-day workweek supporting a project involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

We're looking for a knowledgeable, hands-on construction safety professional who understands federal construction safety requirements, takes a proactive approach to identifying hazards, and can work effectively with project leadership and field personnel.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Conduct daily job site safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, unsafe conditions, and opportunities for improvement.
• Work closely with construction crews, supervisors, subcontractors, and project management to promote safe work practices.
• Support compliance with applicable OSHA regulations, USACE safety requirements, and project-specific safety standards.
• Implement and maintain site-specific safety programs, policies, and procedures.
• Lead and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and project safety orientations.
• Review and maintain employee safety training records and required documentation.
• Document safety observations, inspections, incidents, and corrective actions.
• Assist with incident investigations, accident reporting, and the development of preventive measures.
• Participate in the development and implementation of Site-Specific Safety Plans.
• Review owner and contractor safety requirements to ensure project compliance.
• Develop positive working relationships with field personnel, project leadership, and outside agencies.
• Promote a proactive safety culture focused on hazard prevention and continuous improvement.

Required qualifications:

• Minimum of 5 years of relevant construction safety experience.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification.
• Current CPR/First Aid certification.
• Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification OR a bachelor's degree in Safety.
• Strong understanding of OSHA construction standards and workplace safety regulations.
• Experience conducting job site safety inspections, hazard assessments, and safety audits.
• Ability to communicate effectively with construction crews, project management, and other stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills and experience maintaining safety documentation and reports.
• Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email.

Preferred qualifications:

• Previous experience serving as a Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO).
• Experience supporting USACE or other federal construction projects.
• Familiarity with USACE EM 385-1-1 safety requirements.
• Experience developing or maintaining Accident Prevention Plans (APPs) and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs).

Physical requirements:

• Stand, walk, bend, squat, and climb stairs or ladders throughout the workday.
• Navigate uneven terrain and active construction environments.
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Access elevated work platforms when necessary.
• Occasionally lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Perform essential safety inspections and observations, with or without reasonable accommodation.

What this opportunity offers:

• $50.00/hour (W2) compensation.
• $1,000 weekly per diem.
• Monday–Thursday schedule with three-day weekends.
• Approximately 40 hours per week.
• Short-term project assignment lasting approximately 4–5 months.
• Opportunity to gain additional experience supporting a USACE construction project.
• Support from an established safety services organization.
