General Definition of Work
The EHS & Governance Specialist supports the organization’s environmental, health, safety, and governance (EHS/ESG) programs by coordinating compliance activities, maintaining management systems, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. This role is responsible for the administration and ongoing improvement of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System while also supporting workplace safety and regulatory compliance efforts.
Working across multiple functions, the Specialist ensures environmental and safety requirements are effectively implemented, monitored, and documented. The role assists with regulatory compliance at the federal, state, and local levels, supports responses to customer and regulatory inquiries, and contributes to sustainability and performance improvement initiatives.
This position provides operational and analytical support by organizing data, interpreting requirements, and facilitating cross-functional communication. While not accountable for final legal or strategic decisions, the Specialist plays an important role in helping the organization reduce risk, maintain compliance, and achieve its environmental and safety objectives.
Qualification Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Chemistry, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Two to five years of experience in environmental, health & safety, sustainability, or regulatory compliance, preferably within an automotive or manufacturing environment.
• Minimum of three years of general office experience required in a manufacturing environment.
• Familiarity with ISO 14001 and exposure to safety management systems required.
• Relevant environmental, health and safety, or auditing certifications preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Working knowledge of environmental regulations (EPA, RCRA, TSCA) and general workplace safety requirements (OSHA).
• Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC) and data-driven decision-making.
• Understanding of how EHS requirements intersect with manufacturing operations, product compliance, and customer expectations.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accurate records.
• Effective communication skills, including the ability to present complex regulatory or ESG topics in a clear and concise manner.
• Proficiency with data analysis, reporting tools, and standard business software (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaborate across functions, and engage with international teams.
• Ability to research global regulatory requirements and apply findings to company processes and products.
Essential Functions
• Coordinate and support the administration and continuous improvement of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, ensuring alignment with operational practices and broader EHS objectives.
• Support workplace safety initiatives by reinforcing compliance with OSHA-related requirements, company policies, and safe work practices in coordination with site leadership.
• Monitor regulatory developments (EPA, OSHA, DOT, and applicable international standards), including emerging requirements related to PFAS and restricted substances, and assist with integrating requirements into company processes.
• Act as a central coordination point for EHS, ESG, and product compliance information, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and timely responses to customers, suppliers, and regulatory agencies.
• Coordinate environmental and safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews, track findings and follow-up actions to completion.
• Assist in managing environmental programs, including hazardous and nonhazardous waste, chemical compliance, and sustainability metrics, while supporting safe handling, storage, and disposal practices.
• Support regulatory reporting requirements, including substance-based reporting obligations under applicable environmental regulations.
• Utilize systems such as SAP and other internal tools to gather, track, and analyze production, material, and compliance data.
• Coordinate the collection, validation, and maintenance of environmental, energy, product, and material compliance data, including chemical composition and restricted substance information, to support reporting and regulatory requirements.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to evaluate materials, processes, and new product introductions for environmental and safety compliance risks.
• Support coordination and delivery of environmental and safety training (e.g., RCRA, DOT, or site-specific requirements), as applicable.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, and carbon footprint reduction efforts.
• Translate technical regulatory and ESG requirements into clear, actionable information for internal teams and external customers.
Physical Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Frequently required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods while operating a computer to review detailed documents, data, and visual information.
• Occasionally required to move about the facility, including the manufacturing floor, to observe processes and support compliance activities.
• Perform tasks that may involve bending, reaching or adjusting equipment or materials.
• Communicate information effectively with others in person and electronically.
• Perceive and process information at normal conversational levels.
• Work in an environment with varying noise levels, including office and production areas.
• Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) when accessing designated manufacturing areas.
