General
This is a full-time, FLSA-exempt position that will report to the President and CEO. The Safety Director must meet the requirements of FAA 14 CFR 119.65(a)(1). The individual in this position has the primary responsibility of overseeing the airline’s safe operations for both its employees and members. They will assume a proactive stance in performing their duties and responsibilities and will keep the President and CEO informed on a continuous basis of any and all concerns that might affect the safety or security of the airline. The Safety Director is a key safety position, that ensures all Eastern Airlines personnel, process, and procedures, and promote safety, security, quality, and regulatory compliance for all Eastern Airlines operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee the operation of the airline's Safety Management System (SMS) program. Report to the President and CEO on implementation, operation, and all matters that adversely affect the airworthiness of aircraft or efficiency of technical operations personnel
- Implement and oversee of Company’s Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) program
- Implement, manage, and direct the Company’s efforts to gain the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification
- Implement programs, policies, or procedures that ensure all Company aircraft are maintained in a safe, airworthy condition and in accordance with applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulations; Investigate and analyze the root cause of any safety-related symptoms or incidents and recommend policies, programs, or procedures to prevent future occurrences
- Develop, implement, and administer training programs related to safety and quality assurance objectives
- Buildout or strengthen the Company’s overall Safety Department
- Oversee additional safety programs including Emergency Response, Internal Evaluation Program, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Hazardous Materials Program (HAZMAT), Fatigue Risk Management Program (FRMP), and Aviation Safety Action Programs (ASAP)
- Work with Tech writer/Technical Publications personnel to ensure relevant company manuals required by 14 CFR are current, available, or updated and include appropriate policies, procedures, or directives relating to the health and safety of the airline
- Performs audits from time to time designed to improve the safety or quality of the airline’s operations and meets with appropriate personnel to communicate results and suggest improvement
- Maintains and assists others in maintaining the Company’s technical library, training records, and distribution of records
- May be called upon to liaise with the local FAA Flight Safety District Office, OSHA, NTSB, or other regulatory agencies as directed by the President and CEO pertaining to areas of function and responsibility
- Develop and administer the budgets needed to ensure necessary resources are provided to the functions assigned to safety
- Perform other duties as assigned by the President and CEO.
Qualifications
- Requires an FAA commercial pilot, airline transport pilot certificate, an FAA mechanics certificate, or an FAA aircraft dispatcher certificate;
- Requires at least three (3) years experience in a supervisory position with a 14 CFR Part 121 or Part 135 scheduled air carrier;
- In lieu of the above, at least three (3) years experience in U.S. military aviation operations or a supervisory position previously held with a U.S. government department, board, or agency that deals directly with aviation matters may be accepted;
- Requires strong knowledge or operations specifications, aviation safety standards, and operating practices, and applicable provisions or Federal Aviation Regulations Parts 1, 91, 119, 121, or 135;
- Ability to multitask and work under pressure in a dynamic environment;
- Must exercise good judgment;
- Travel will be required;
- Pass a two (2) year drug and alcohol background check, pre-employment drug test, and criminal history records check (CHRC);
