Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Firmware Engineer to develop embedded firmware for next-generation implantable and external neurostimulation systems. This role provides technical leadership for battery-powered medical devices, wireless communications, secure firmware updates, and safety-critical system functions that directly impact patient quality of life.
The Senior Firmware Engineer will contribute to firmware architecture, system design, implementation, verification, and troubleshooting while collaborating closely with hardware, software, systems, quality, and regulatory teams. Successful candidates are experienced in embedded systems development and enjoy solving complex challenges involving low-power operation, wireless communications, cybersecurity, and device reliability. This position also serves as a technical mentor, helping establish engineering best practices through design reviews, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead firmware architecture, design, development, and testing for embedded medical device systems.
- Collaborate with hardware and software engineers to define firmware requirements and system architecture.
- Participate throughout the product lifecycle, including concept development, requirements, design, verification, validation, and clinical support.
- Support hardware bring-up and assist in debugging new electronic designs.
- Troubleshoot and lead root cause investigations of development, manufacturing, and field issues.
- Develop tools and methodologies to improve engineering efficiency and product quality.
- Create and maintain firmware documentation, technical reports, and design records.
- Provide technical leadership through design reviews, code reviews, mentoring, and the establishment of firmware development best practices.
- Support verification, validation, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Evaluate technical risks and trade-offs involving safety, security, reliability, power consumption, and usability.
- Define firmware verification strategies and support test planning activities.
- Contribute to cybersecurity, risk management, and design control activities throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain automated unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop test solutions to support product verification activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent engineering discipline (Master's degree preferred).
- 7+ years of progressive experience developing embedded firmware in C and/or C++ for microcontroller-based systems.
- Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership in embedded firmware development, including architecture, design reviews, and mentoring.
- Experience developing firmware for Arm Cortex-M or similar embedded processor platforms.
- Experience developing low-level peripheral drivers (SPI, UART, DMA, ADC/DAC, timers).
- Strong understanding of electrical circuits, power management, and sensor interfacing.
- Excellent hardware/firmware debugging skills, including analog and digital electronics, using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG/SWD debuggers.
- Experience developing products within regulated design control or quality management system (QMS) environments.
- Experience with configuration management, issue tracking, and problem resolution processes.
- Excellent technical documentation and written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS), such as Micrium, FreeRTOS, ThreadX, or equivalent.
- Experience developing firmware for battery-powered or ultra-low-power embedded systems.
- Experience reading schematics, datasheets, and hardware design documentation.
- Experience with collaborative software development workflows using Git-based version control systems.
- Experience developing automated unit, integration, or verification tests for embedded software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing implantable medical devices, neurostimulation systems, or Class II/III medical devices.
- Experience developing medical devices within FDA-regulated environments, including familiarity with IEC 62304, ISO 14971, ISO 14708-3, IEC 60601, and safety-critical software development practices.
- Experience with low-power wireless power transfer, coil systems, or RF technologies.
- Experience with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) firmware development, including pairing, bonding, GATT services, and secure communications.
- Experience with automated unit testing frameworks such as Ceedling, Unity, CMock, GoogleTest, or equivalent.
- Experience implementing cybersecurity controls, secure communications, cryptographic services, secure boot, or secure firmware update mechanisms in embedded systems.
- Experience with MISRA C, static analysis tools, and coding standards for embedded systems.
- Experience with Silicon Labs EFM32/EFR32 platforms, Gecko SDK, Micrium OS, or similar embedded ecosystems.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Docker-based build systems, and test automation using Python.
- Experience with cybersecurity risk management, software bill of materials (SBOM) management, and vulnerability assessment.
Work Environment
- Office and laboratory-based engineering environment.

- Fast-paced environment supporting multiple concurrent projects.
