Automation Engineer

Overview Penn Life Sciences is seeking a skilled Automation Engineer to join our team in Langhorne, PA. The Automation Engineer will support the design, implementation, and sustainment of automation and control systems used in sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing and facility operations. This role partners closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Validation teams to ensure reliable, compliant operation of PLC, HMI, and SCADA-based systems. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on automation experience, strong troubleshooting capability, and a working understanding of cGMP and computerized systems expectations in a regulated manufacturing environment. Responsibilities Design, implement, and support automation and control systems for manufacturing and facility equipment, including PLC, HMI, and SCADA platforms. Troubleshoot automation and control system issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to improve equipment reliability and uptime. Develop, modify, and maintain PLC logic and HMI/SCADA configurations in accordance with approved standards, change control procedures, and validated system requirements. Support new equipment installations and automation-related capital projects, including requirements definition, vendor coordination, FAT/SAT participation, commissioning, and system handoff. Assist with computerized systems compliance activities, including change control, system documentation, risk assessments, and validation support. Maintain accurate, inspection-ready automation documentation such as control narratives, network diagrams, I/O lists, alarm configurations, and system backups. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline required. Minimum of 4–7 years of hands-on automation or controls engineering experience in a regulated manufacturing environment (pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, or similar). Demonstrated experience supporting PLC/HMI/SCADA systems, including troubleshooting and system modifications in a production setting. Working knowledge of cGMP requirements, computerized systems practices, and data integrity principles within regulated manufacturing. Familiarity with industrial networking concepts and automation system connectivity (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/Serial). Strong analytical, organizational, and documentation skills with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and operational reliability. Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and external vendors.
