Motor Pool MechanicEmployer: Bladen CountySalary: $48,867.00 - $53,254.50 AnnuallyLocation: Elizabethtown, NCJob Type: Full-TimeJob Number: 2700383Department: Motor PoolOpening Date: 08/25/2026DescriptionAn employee in this class inspects, troubleshoots, and performs routine to moderately complex maintenance and repair work on County vehicles including trucks, cars, vans, buses, small engine powered equipment, mower decks, and related work as required; ordering parts; scheduling appointments for in-house work as well as out of shop work; performing record keeping of gas card, gas reports, Sheriff Department impounded vehicles, inspections, and work tickets on all County vehicles; handling the release and collection of fees for impounded Sheriff Department vehicles; and performing monthly report on inspected vehicles. Reports to Operations Director.DutiesPerforms supervisor and lead duties for other mechanics in the department.Performs maintenance for County vehicles and Emergency Response vehicles; orders parts for vehicles.Maintains accurate records of maintenance performed on County vehicles.Schedules work on vehicles in-house as well as out of shop work.Maintains records of the Sheriff Department's impounded vehicles.Handles the release and collection of fees for Sheriff Department's impounded vehicles.Maintains records of gas cards; orders and issues gas cards.Coordinates vehicle insurance claims with insurance claim adjusters.Maintains the inventory of tools and equipment.Performs North Carolina vehicle inspections and prepares monthly reports.Cleans and maintains shop in safe and orderly condition.Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as repair orders, bills, computer trouble codes, parts catalog, and impound form.Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as work order form, County vehicle list, fuel cards, and North Carolina inspection reports.Refers to auto repair manuals, head light adjuster manual, air conditioner manual, trouble code manual, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.Operates a variety of equipment such as handheld computer, brake lathe machine, air conditioner machine, transmission machine, vehicle lift, etc.Uses a variety of tools such as air wrenches, hand wrenches, floor jack, parts washer, brake lathe, vehicle lifts, A/C equipment, tire changer, engine hoist, etc.Maintains and stocks a variety of supplies such as oil, Freon, transmission fluid, filters, tires, wiper blades, batteries, etc.Operates a diagnostic computer and a variety of computer software, etc.Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Operations Director, department heads, drivers of County vehicles, owners of impounded vehicles, insurance claim adjusters, parts vendors, and the general public.Answers the telephone providing assistance, taking messages and transferring calls to appropriate personnel.Coordinates towing and wrecker service.Completes work orders of repaired vehicles.Picks up paperwork from the Sheriff Department for impound vehicles.Serves as Fork Lift Operator for receiving supplies for Purchasing Agent.Performs related duties as required.Physical Requirements: Work in this class is defined as heavy work requiring physical exertion of in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employee has to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling talking, and hearing. Employee must have the visual acuity to visually inspect small defects or parts, operation or inspection of machines and emergency vehicles, use measurement devices, and to determine the neatness and accuracy of work assigned. Employee must have the stamina to work for extended periods.Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold with snow and ice. Employee is subject to noise which may cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employee is subject to vibration, such as exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body and is also subject to workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or exposure to chemicals, oils and fuels. Employee is subject to atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, dusts and oils. May work in close quarters, small spaces and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Motor Pool Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Auto Mechanic II.Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment repair work and large-scale shop operations.Considerable knowledge of the characteristics and operating principles of internal combustion engines.Considerable knowledge of methods, practices and procedures in repairing, overhauling, and maintaining gasoline-and diesel-powered automobiles and trucks.Considerable knowledge of the materials and parts used for the repair of automotive equipment.Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions of the work.Comprehensive knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department.Knowledge of the various testing devices, machines, and hand tools used in mechanical repair work.Knowledge of the principles and practices of inventory control.Knowledge of the materials and parts used for the repair of automotive equipment.General knowledge of prices and local sources of supply for necessary garage supplies, materials, and replacement parts.Skilled in the use of machine and hand tools.Ability to plan and ensure adherence to a preventive maintenance plan suitable for the County's automotive fleet.Skilled in the use of diagnostic equipment, computers and software.Ability to supervise the work of subordinates and instruct employees in proper work techniques.Ability to plan work details and carry out work assignments.Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment in applying standards to technical aspects of work.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.Ability to read and interpret relatively complex materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.Ability to assemble and analyze information and make written reports and records in a concise, clear and effective manner.Ability to maintain accurate files and compile data into report form.Ability to perform the manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignment.Education and Experience RequirementsMinimum Education and Experience: Requires a high school diploma supplemented by five to six years of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and light equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
