IT Senior Network Engineer

Job Overview This position is within the University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT), Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX). The role is an IT Senior Network Engineer responsible for advanced network design, research, implementation, and escalation support across the optical, switched, and routed layers of the MAX network and its enhanced services. This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services; it may also be subject to being on call 24/7 during scheduled time periods. Responsibilities High‑level architectural planning and design of current and next‑generation network infrastructures. Advanced design, research, implementation, and escalation support across optical, switched, and routed layers of the MAX network. Hands‑on maintenance and operational support of DWDM optical systems, dark fiber, routers, switches, and physical plant. Lead or support production network migrations with minimal service disruption. Evaluate and select vendor platforms for future deployments. Ensure reliable IPv4/IPv6 connectivity across wide area research and education (R&E) networks. Assist the Senior Systems Architect in modernizing a robust, scalable, and sustainable systems and software architecture framework. Perform network monitoring and management, DNS services, and support for software tools. Use optical and network test equipment for troubleshooting and assurance. Manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Lead presentations with small to medium‑sized groups; organize and provide direction to junior staff members. Bridge the gap between team manager and team members on technical topics. Provide exemplary customer service. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Four (4) years of professional experience supporting the operations, maintenance, and administration of information technology infrastructure; alternative work experience may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to lead presentations with small to medium‑sized groups. Ability to organize and provide direction to junior staff members. Demonstrated commitment to customer service. Effective leadership bridging the gap between team manager and team members on technical topics. Skilled in managing workload and delivery assignments on time. Proficiency with office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspaces. Deep knowledge of WAN design, network monitoring and management tools, DNS services, and software tools. Expertise with optical and network test equipment. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills. Physical Demands At times the Network Engineer must install network gear into the network racks. An Engineer must be able to carry 50 lbs.
