Position Overview
Our client, a well-established healthcare organization, is seeking an experienced Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse to join their obstetrics team in Silver Spring, Maryland. This is an onsite, 90-day contract engagement supporting a busy birthing unit where clinical judgment, calm under pressure, and genuine compassion matter every single shift.

Key Responsibilities
You will provide direct nursing care to patients through all stages of labor, delivery, and immediate postpartum recovery. This includes admission assessments, ongoing physical and emotional evaluation, and the development and execution of individualized plans of care in coordination with the attending physician and the wider care team.
Continuous electronic fetal monitoring is central to the role. You will interpret fetal heart rate tracings, recognize category changes and non-reassuring patterns, escalate findings promptly, and intervene according to established protocols. You will also manage labor augmentation and induction protocols, administer medications safely, and support patients through both medicated and unmedicated births.
You will assist with vaginal deliveries and provide circulating or scrub support for cesarean sections as needed. Immediate newborn care responsibilities include assessment, stabilization, thermoregulation, identification procedures, and facilitating early skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding initiation.
Accurate, timely documentation in the electronic health record is required for every encounter. You will educate patients and families on labor progression, pain management options, postpartum recovery, and newborn care, and you will contribute to a respectful unit culture through clear communication with physicians, midwives, anesthesia staff, and nursing colleagues.
You will participate in obstetric emergency response, including postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, and emergent cesarean situations, executing your role within the team response quickly and accurately. You will also support triage of patients presenting to the unit, performing initial assessment, determining acuity, and communicating findings to the provider so that admission or discharge decisions can be made without delay.
Requirements
An active, unrestricted Registered Nurse license valid in the state of Maryland is required at the time of hire. Candidates holding a multistate compact license that covers Maryland practice are welcome to apply.
You must have prior labor and delivery experience in a hospital setting. Current BLS certification is required, along with NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification. Demonstrated competency in electronic fetal monitoring interpretation is essential to this role.
Strong assessment and critical-thinking skills are mandatory, as is the ability to remain composed and decisive during obstetric emergencies. You must be comfortable working full shifts onsite, documenting in an electronic health record system, and communicating clearly with patients, families, and interdisciplinary colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications
ACLS certification and AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring credentialing are preferred. Experience in a high-volume or higher-acuity birthing center, or exposure to high-risk obstetric populations, is viewed favorably.
Prior contract or travel nursing experience is a plus, as is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Candidates with experience precepting newer nurses, or with additional competencies in postpartum, triage, or newborn nursery care, will stand out.
Familiarity with Epic or a comparable electronic health record shortens ramp-up time and is viewed positively. Comfort with a rotating or night shift schedule, flexibility across labor, recovery, and postpartum assignments, and experience supporting patients with diverse cultural expectations around birth are all qualities that succeed in this unit.
Compensation and Benefits
This engagement pays an hourly rate in the range of $45.83 to $47.83, commensurate with experience and credentials. The assignment is scheduled as a 90-day contract with a defined end date, giving you a clear planning horizon.
