Pharmacy Tech Specialist - Oncology

Summary Reports to Pharmacy Manager, Oncology and Sterile Compounding. Under the supervision of an Oncology Pharmacist and direction of a Pharmacy Technician Supervisor or Technician Group Leader, the Technician Specialist in Oncology and Sterile Compounding performs sterile and non‑sterile compounding of medications, predominately oncology, in compliance with USP Chapter 800 Hazardous Drugs, USP Chapter 797 Pharmaceutical Compounding – Sterile Preparations, and NIOSH recommendations. The specialist maintains regulatory compliance with relevant state and federal guidelines, coordinates operations relating to compounding and dispensing of oncology and infusion medications, promotes patient safety by ensuring proper segregation of hazardous medications, and collaborates with pharmacy oncology team members to order, receive, inventory, and store medications and ancillary supplies. Responsibilities Ensure a sterile compounding environment and all equipment are cleaned and maintained under aseptic conditions in accordance with departmental SOPs. Perform hand hygiene and garbing practices per SOPs. Compensate medications in compliance with USP 797, USP 800, NIOSH recommendations, and Brown University Health policies. Perform non‑sterile compounding in compliance with USP 795, USP 800, NIOSH recommendations, and Brown University Health policies. Document accurately suspended medications per policy and procedures. Compensate investigational medications in compliance with specific protocols. Perform computer activities necessary for compounding and follow product documentation and check processes. Calibrate and operate ancillary compounding equipment (e.g., pumps). Deliver compounded medication ensuring proper storage and stability requirements are met. Collaborate with pharmacy oncology and purchasing teams to procure medications and related supplies in a timely manner. Ensure oncology and hazardous medications are segregated. Manage inventory, including receiving, sorting, stocking, rotation, expiration checking, and disposal per policy. Track temperature monitoring and environmental controls, triage out‑of‑range controls as needed. Transfer oncology and infusion medications to off‑site satellite locations, if required. Maintain records, file tasks, and compile work volume statistics. Orient and train pharmacy technicians, student interns, and students externs. Proactively solve problems impacting pharmacy oncology services. Perform all duties of other Pharmacy Technician job categories as may be required. Minimum Qualifications Basic Knowledge – High school graduate or equivalent; completion of one to two years of college preferred; current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician II licensure; current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT). Experience – Minimum 3 years as a pharmacy technician, including 2 years investigative, oncology, and/or sterile compounding experience, preferably in a similarly diverse and operationally complex healthcare environment. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems, automated dispensing technology, and personal computers. Excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to multi‑task and reprioritize while maintaining accuracy and service standards. Within 2 months of hire, obtain and maintain internal IV and oncology credentialing, with semi‑annual renewal thereafter, as demonstrated by successful competency assessments. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Work may require extended periods standing and walking, visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer, and occasional travel between affiliates and sites. Independent Action Performs work independently within department policies and practices; refers complex problems to supervisor for clarification. Pay Range $25.42 – $26.50 per hour.
