Snowmaker

Tamarack Resort

Snowmaker Position

The Snowmaker is responsible for operating and maintaining snowmaking equipment to create and maintain high-quality, man-made snow across the mountain's trails and features. This seasonal position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, often during overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays. The Snowmaker works as part of a team to ensure optimal snow coverage for guest safety and enjoyment.

Working at Tamarack is an incredibly rewarding and magical experience. Not only will you be working in a beautiful mountain environment, but you will also receive amazing employee perks like a season pass for you and your family, resort discounts, free childcare and more!

Mountains, meadows and lakes are for everyone, and our resort community is no different. We are committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in hiring, training, and career advancement. We celebrate and respect our diverse team members and guests.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate snowmaking equipment: Safely operate and monitor various types of snow guns, air compressors, and high-pressure water systems.
  • Monitor conditions: Constantly assess weather conditions (temperature, humidity, wind) and snow quality to make real-time adjustments to snowmaking equipment for optimal production.
  • Set up and tear down: Transport, set up, move, and disassemble snowmaking guns and hoses across the mountain, often navigating challenging and icy terrain.
  • Perform routine maintenance: Conduct minor repairs, troubleshooting, and daily maintenance on equipment to ensure it operates efficiently. This includes checking nozzles, draining hoses, and reporting major malfunctions to a supervisor.
  • Coordinate with other departments: Communicate effectively with other mountain operations teams, such as Grooming and Ski Patrol, to coordinate snow placement and distribution.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate logs and records of snow production, equipment status, and maintenance activities.
  • Adhere to safety protocols: Work safely around high-voltage equipment and high-pressure systems. Always follow company safety guidelines and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • General duties: Perform other tasks as assigned, such as shoveling snow and ice, or assisting in other departments during downtime.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Previous snowmaking experience is preferred but not always required. Training is often provided on-the-job.
  • Mechanical aptitude: Basic knowledge of mechanical systems and comfort using hand tools.
  • Physical stamina: Must be physically capable of performing strenuous labor in harsh weather conditions, including lifting and carrying heavy equipment (up to 50 75 lbs), standing for extended periods, and working on slippery, uneven surfaces.
  • Outdoor skills: Ability to work outdoors in extremely cold, wet, and windy conditions for prolonged periods.
  • Communication: Strong communication skills to receive daily instructions and report issues clearly.
  • Work ethic: Must be dependable, self-motivated, and capable of working independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Adaptability: The ability to work flexible and varying shifts, which are dependent on weather and production needs.
  • Driver's license: A valid state driver's license is required, often with a clean driving record.

Work environment:

  • This is a physically demanding outdoor position in an alpine environment.
  • Exposure to extreme cold, wind, ice, snow, and low visibility is common.
  • Shifts can be irregular and often require working at night.
  • The work is performed on varied, sometimes steep, and potentially hazardous terrain.
