Job Description
Equipment Superintendent — Hensley Civil
About the role
Hensley Civil is a heavy civil contractor and land developer based in Murfreesboro, TN. We run 37 pieces of iron on grading, utility, and site development jobs across Middle Tennessee, and we own what we run.
The Equipment Superintendent is the head of our fleet. You own all 37 units and report directly to the owner. You keep it running, you decide what gets fixed in-house and what goes to the dealer, you set the PM schedule, and you are the one the superintendent calls when a machine goes down on a job. You will work out of our shop and in the field, and you will lead the mechanics and helpers we add under you as the fleet grows.
Straight talk: our maintenance has been reactive. We fix iron when it breaks, and it costs us on every job. We are hiring you to change that, and you will have the authority to do it. This is a hands-on lead role, not a desk job. You turn wrenches most of the day and run the program the rest of it.
What you'll do
Keep the fleet running
- Diagnose and repair excavators, dozers, loaders, articulated and rigid haul trucks, rollers, skid steers, and compact equipment, in the shop and on the job site.
- Repair hydraulic, electrical, diesel engine, drivetrain, and undercarriage systems. Pull codes with manufacturer diagnostic software and fix the cause, not the symptom.
- Respond to breakdowns on active jobs. Get the machine back up or get a replacement unit moving so the crew does not sit.
- Maintain on-road trucks (dump trucks, lowboy tractors, service and pickup trucks) and trailers.
Run the maintenance program
- Build and own the preventive maintenance schedule by hours and miles for every unit. Make sure it gets done, on the job if needed.
- Track every repair, PM, and part in the maintenance log. Report downtime, cost per unit, and recurring failures to the owner monthly.
- Decide what gets fixed in-house vs. sent to the dealer. Manage dealer and vendor relationships, warranty claims, and outside repair quotes.
- Keep trucks and trailers DOT-compliant: annual inspections, driver vehicle inspection reports, brake and tire condition.
- Flag equipment that is costing more to keep than to replace and recommend what to buy, sell, or rent.
Run the shop and the parts
- Keep the shop, service truck, and tools organized, stocked, and safe.
- Manage parts, filters, fluids, and wear items inventory. Buy smart and keep critical spares on hand.
- Set up and maintain the fuel, DEF, and lube program for the fleet.
Lead people
- Train operators on daily walk-arounds, greasing, and what to report. Hold them to it.
- Supervise and train helper mechanics and lube techs as the team grows.
- Set the standard for safety in the shop and around equipment. Follow OSHA, lockout/tagout, and company safety policy.
- Coordinate with superintendents and project managers on equipment status, moves, and repair scheduling.
- Take after-hours and weekend breakdown calls as needed. Civil work does not stop at 5.
First 90 days
- Days 1–30: Know the fleet. Hours, condition, and open issues on all 37 units. Find out what is down, what is limping, and what is about to fail. Fix what keeps a crew from working.
- Days 31–60: Build the program. Every unit on a PM interval. A maintenance log that gets used. The top five downtime causes identified and knocked out.
- Days 61–90: Report to the owner. Cost per unit, what to keep, what to sell, what to rent instead of own, and what you need (people, parts, tools) to keep the fleet running.
What you bring
- 7+ years repairing heavy construction equipment, with at least 2 of those as a lead, shop foreman, or the go-to mechanic for a contractor's fleet.
- Deep knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, 12V/24V electrical, and powertrains. You can read wiring diagrams and hydraulic schematics without help.
- Hands-on experience with excavators, dozers, loaders, haul trucks, rollers, and compact equipment from more than one manufacturer.
- Experience using OEM diagnostic tools (Cat ET, Komatsu KOMTRAX/PC, Deere Service ADVISOR, Volvo Tech Tool, or similar).
- Experience with on-road diesel trucks and DOT inspection requirements.
- Own hand tools. We supply the shop, specialty tools, and the service truck.
- Able to work independently, make the call on a repair, and stand behind it.
- Valid driver's license with a clean record. Must be insurable to drive company trucks.
- Able to lift 75 lb, work outdoors in all weather, and get under a machine on a job site.
- Clear communicator. You can explain to a superintendent what is wrong, how long it will take, and what it will cost.
Preferred
- Dealer or factory training with Caterpillar, Komatsu, John Deere, Volvo, Case, Hitachi, Bobcat, or Takeuchi.
- Experience on Kenworth, Mack, or Peterbilt trucks and Cummins or PACCAR engines.
- Class A CDL. You will move equipment on a lowboy from time to time.
- Welding and fabrication (stick and MIG). Bucket, blade, and cutting-edge repair.
- Air conditioning certification (EPA 609).
- Experience setting up or running a fleet maintenance system (Fleetio, HCSS Equipment360, or a spreadsheet you built and actually kept up).
- Background on a civil, grading, or utility contractor's fleet rather than a dealer shop only.
Pay and benefits
- Pay: $40–48 per hour, based on experience. Overtime paid at time and a half.
- Company service truck, fuel card
- Health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Paid holidays and paid vacation.
- Factory and dealer training paid by the company.
- A fleet you run your way, and the authority to fix what is broken in how we maintain it.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM start, with overtime and after-hours breakdown calls as needed. In person at our shop in Murfreesboro and on job sites across Middle Tennessee.
