Field Services Manager - Directional Drilling and Underground Construction

OverviewAs a Field Services Manager - Directional Drilling and Underground Construction, you will oversee undergroundtelecommunications construction projects, directional drilling operations, locating activities, and field crews. You will beresponsible for ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with customerspecifications, applicable permits, and quality standards.ResponsibilitiesAs a Field Services Manager - Directional Drilling and Underground Construction will be in charge of the horizontal directional drilling and locating equipment, along with managing crews, coordinating field operations, and resolving construction challenges. You believe in doing the job right, delivering high-quality work, and supporting your teams in the field.In addition, you will:Manage daily field operations for underground telecommunications and fiber construction projectsDirect and support directional drilling, locating, excavation, conduit installation, fiber construction, restoration, andrelated field activitiesSupervise foremen, drill operators, locators, equipment operators, and underground construction crews.Plan crew assignments, equipment needs, production schedules, and daily work activitiesMonitor project progress, productivity, quality, and schedule performanceOperate or provide technical guidance on horizontal directional drilling equipment when neededProvide field support for locating drill heads, utilities, bore paths, and underground facilitiesReview utility locates and coordinate potholing or daylighting to verify underground facilities before drilling orexcavation beginsConfirm that required permits, utility locates, maps, drawings, and construction documents are complete and available at the job siteRead and interpret construction prints, utility maps, drawings, bore profiles, diagrams, and project specificationsEnsure drilling and underground construction activities comply with applicable city, county, state, customer, andcompany requirementsInspect work in progress and completed construction to confirm workmanship meets project and customerspecificationsEnsure the safety of employees, the public, and existing underground facilitiesConduct or support jobsite safety meetings, job hazard analyses, preconstruction reviews, and daily work planningEnforce company safety procedures and ensure crews use appropriate personal protective equipmentCoordinate traffic control, pedestrian control, worksite setup, site cleanup, and restoration activitiesIdentify field conflicts, production delays, utility concerns, and safety risks, and implement appropriate correctiveactionsCommunicate project updates, staffing needs, schedule changes, and field concerns to operations leadership andother project stakeholdersCoordinate with customers, inspectors, utility representatives, subcontractors, municipalities, and internal departments as requiredTrain, coach, and develop field employees, foremen, drill operators, and locatorsAddress employee performance, attendance, safety, and operational concerns in accordance with company policiesPromote accountability, teamwork, quality, and professional conduct across assigned crewsAssist with interviewing, onboarding, and training field employees as neededMaintain accurate documentation related to production, safety, equipment, materials, incidents, and completed workMonitor equipment condition and ensure required inspections and preventive maintenance are completedCoordinate minor equipment repairs and report significant maintenance needsEnsure company vehicles, drilling equipment, locating equipment, trailers, and tools are operated safely and properlyOperate construction equipment, vehicles, and machinery when appropriately trained, certified, and directedPerform additional duties as assigned to support field operations and project completionQualificationsAbout You:Minimum of 3 years of horizontal directional drilling experiencePrevious experience operating directional drilling equipment and locating equipmentDemonstrated experience supervising or managing underground construction crewsWorking knowledge of underground telecommunications construction and fiber-optic buildsExperience with Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar horizontal directional drilling equipmentExperience with commonly used locating systems and underground utility locating practicesAbility to read and interpret utility locates, construction maps, drawings, bore profiles, diagrams, and projectspecificationsKnowledge of potholing, daylighting, bore planning, conduit installation, restoration, and underground utility protectionUnderstanding of applicable city, county, state, and utility clearance requirementsStrong commitment to workplace safety, quality, and regulatory complianceAbility to manage multiple crews, priorities, and job sites effectivelyAbility to lead employees, communicate expectations, provide coaching, and resolve field issues professionallyStrong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skillsValid driver's license with a driving record that meets company requirementsAbility to work outdoors in varying weather conditionsAbility to travel between assigned job sitesAbility to work overtime, evenings, weekends, or extended hours based on project and operational needs (Normal schedule of M-F, approximately from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM)Five or more years of underground telecommunications construction experience, is preferredPrevious experience as a field manager, construction manager, general foreman, or underground constructionsupervisor, is preferredOSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification, is desiredFirst Aid and CPR certification, is desiredCompetent Person training applicable to excavation and trenching, is preferredExperience overseeing multiple directional drilling crews or underground fiber construction projects, is preferredExperience coordinating with inspectors, municipalities, utility owners, customers, and subcontractors, is preferredExperience tracking production, labor, equipment, materials, and project documentation, is preferredBilingual in English/Spanish, is a plusCompensation of mid $70,000 annually, plus a company
