The Restitution Assistant will assist crime victims in their completion of restitution documentation and process to court for an order. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred but not required.

What you will do

Victim Restitution Services case review and research - 70%

• Use discretion to screen, assess and verify restitution information to ensure that all documentation is valid and sufficiently supports the victim’s claim and communicates with victims regarding restitution issues. Is responsible for notifying the Director of Victim Services or Deputy District Attorney if there are claims that may need special attention.
• Assist victims to ascertain why restitution was not ordered or why a different amount was ordered than was requested. Research is followed up by the proper documentation to remedy the discrepancy/problem which requires knowledge of the legal documents necessary in each situation.
• Proactively contact victims of serious traffic injuries to determine extent of injuries and make recommendation if case should be treated as VRA. Refer victims to appropriate resources for assistance as part of the proactive advocacy role.

Victim Services - 20%

• Must be able to prioritize and multi-task in order to fulfill needs of Deputy District Attorney’s, victims, and others while keeping track of court dates and deadlines.
• Review and compile victim restitution information and process same for court order.
• Prepare statistical information regarding the restitution program. Continually assess the practicality of current procedures/documents, determines efficient changes, and implements them.
• Train new Deputy District Attorneys on restitution procedures and is available for questions the Deputy District Attorney’s may have.
• Assist with additional Victim Services- Data entry, VRA notifications, Crime Victim Compensation.

Other Duties - 10%

• Follow policies and procedures in the Weld County District Attorney’s Office Policy Manual and adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines and appropriate release of information outlined in both.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

• Associate's Degree criminal justice, human services or closely related field with a background in business or accounting or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Skills and Abilities

• Able to learn legal terminology, complete projects assigned, communicate effectively, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, victims and witnesses and agencies.
• Knowledge of Colorado criminal justice system and procedures; and Colorado criminal statutes specifically restitution statutes
• Skilled in the use of computerized data entry equipment and various word processing and /or filing maintenance programs to enter, store and /or retrieve information as requested or otherwise necessary; prepares and updates computer files.
• Ability to prepare and/or correct variety of correspondence and applications; communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to communicate effectively with victims and witnesses from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Ability to exercise tact and understanding in dealing with emotionally distraught clients.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with victims, witnesses, staff, other agencies and the general public.
• Bi-lingual in Spanish highly desirable.
• Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date.

This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
