Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) (Open Continuous Announcement)

Overview ATF is a law enforcement agency in the U.S. Department of Justice that protects our communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, firearm trafficking, illegal use of explosives, arson, bombings, terrorism, and diversion of alcohol and tobacco products. Duties & Responsibilities The position is for a Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) with primary responsibility for prevention, detection, and investigation of substantive and conspiracy‑type violations of laws administered and enforced by ATF. Typical work assignments include: Conduct complex investigations involving illegal and organized crime organizations. Recognize patterns of illegal operations to anticipate or influence events, maintaining awareness of precedent decisions. Develop and investigate leads from known criminal activities, interwoven with legitimate business pursuits. Plan and coordinate to resolve jurisdictional problems involving federal, state, county, and local agencies. Serve as key coordinator for surveillance or undercover work involving complex or dangerous elements. Key Requirements U.S. Citizen or National. Eligible for federal employment based on background investigation. Registered or exempt from the Selective Service. Pass drug screening and random drug tests. Maintain proficiency with firearms. Pass a medical examination. Take and successfully complete a polygraph examination. Possess a valid driver’s license. Complete required training: Occupational Questionnaire, ATF Special Agent Applicant Assessment, Physical Task Test, ATF Special Agent Basic Training (SABT), Structured Interview, and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center’s Criminal Investigator training program (CITP) or equivalent. Experience and Education GS‑11 – One year of specialized experience equivalent to a GL‑9 grade or higher performing full‑range criminal investigations, obtaining investigative leads, participating in operational planning, searches, seizures, arrests, reviewing evidence, and preparing case reports. GS‑12 – One year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS‑11 grade level performing advanced criminal investigations, leading operations, and preparing comprehensive reports. GS‑13 – One year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS‑12 grade performing complex investigations, applying laws and regulations, identifying sources, communicating findings, and preparing detailed briefings.
