Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Teacher

The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to preschool-aged children (ages 2-5) with disabilities to promote developmental growth and school readiness. The ECSE teacher develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), collaborates with families and multidisciplinary teams, and provides evidence-based instruction in inclusive and specialized learning environments in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Virginia Board of Education regulations, and School Board policies.

School: Charles City Elementary School / Special Education

Reports To: Building Principal

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate instructional programs for preschool children with disabilities.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that address students' educational, developmental, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments and collect data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state special education regulations, timelines, and documentation requirements.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families to ensure coordinated services.
  • Participate in eligibility meetings, IEP meetings, manifestation determinations, transition meetings, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Provide specially designed instruction using evidence-based instructional strategies.
  • Create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes positive behavior and student engagement.
  • Implement behavior intervention strategies and positive behavior supports as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, and other service providers.
  • Complete required progress reports, evaluations, Medicaid documentation (if applicable), and state reporting accurately and on time.
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and instructional goals.
  • Participate in Child Find activities, transition planning from Early Intervention (Part C) to preschool special education (Part B), and kindergarten transition planning as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in accordance with FERPA and IDEA.
  • Participate in professional learning and maintain required licensure.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or Director of Special Education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of child development from birth through age five.
  • Knowledge of IDEA, Virginia Special Education Regulations, and early childhood best practices.
  • Ability to develop and implement IEPs.
  • Knowledge of assessment procedures for young children.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Knowledge of behavior management and positive behavioral interventions.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Ability to use educational technology and maintain accurate electronic records.

Qualifications:

  • Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Eligible for or possession of a valid Virginia teaching license with an Endorsement in Special Education: Early Childhood (Birth-Age 5).
  • Preferred: Master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education or a related field. Experience working with preschool-aged children with disabilities. Experience implementing inclusive preschool instructional models. Experience using evidence-based literacy, communication, and behavior interventions.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting instructional materials, and assisting young children.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequent interaction with students requiring physical assistance and behavioral support.
  • Work performed in classrooms, community-based settings, and other educational environments.

Evaluation:

Performance will be evaluated annually by the building administrators in accordance with School Board policy and the Virginia Uniform Performance Standards for Teachers.

FLSA Status: Full-Time / Exempt

Contract: 10 months / 200 Day Teacher Contract (As Approved by the School Board)

Salary: Based on the School Board-approved teacher salary scale
