Part-Time Janitor (AbilityOne Program)

Job Summary This janitorial position at Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana (GCSI) is part of the AbilityOne program in partnership with the federal government to provide healthy operations and environments at local federal facilities. The AbilityOne program is one of the largest sources of employment in the United States for people who are blind or have significant disabilities. GCSI is one of about 500 non‑profit organizations that provides employment opportunities in competitive, integrated environments at federal government locations. The janitor keeps the premises of the office building or other commercial or institutional buildings in a clean and orderly condition. Cleans office areas, courtrooms, hallways, lobbies, breakrooms, cafeterias, restrooms, elevators, stairways, locker rooms, and other assigned work areas. Example Duties and Activities Cleans and polishes lighting fixtures, marble surfaces, and trim. Cleans and disinfects the furniture and equipment. Polishes metalwork. Wipes down walls, ceilings, and woodwork. Washes windows, door panels, and sills. Empties wastebaskets and cleans ashtrays. Transports trash and waste to the disposal area. Replenishes bathroom supplies. Communicates with Goodwill management and customers when appropriate and as needed. Transports small equipment or tools between departments. Sets up tables and chairs in auditoriums or halls. Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors. Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies. Occasionally assists with outside groundskeeping duties such as picking up litter and maintaining an overall clean appearance. Required Competencies Degree and Credential Requirements – NONE. Candidates should demonstrate capability and articulate how prior experiences will help them contribute. Communication Skills – Gives full attention to others, asks questions when appropriate, reads and comprehends basic written sentences. General Labor Skills – Can carry out simple instructions and handle standardized situations with minimal variables. Safety Awareness – Recognizes risks, applies control measures, and follows safety protocols. Preferred Competencies Janitorial Skills – Performs cleaning activities such as removing dust from furniture, blinds, windowsills, sweeping, mopping floors, disinfecting bathrooms, and learning to use janitorial tools and equipment. Floor Cleaning Equipment Expertise – Operates riding and walk‑behind scrubbers, and other floor care equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Other Requirements Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable people with disabilities to perform essential job functions. Moderate to Hard Physical Work – Regularly walk, use hands, kneel or crouch, lift or move up to 25 pounds, manage exposure to dust and debris, be aware of slippery floors and mechanical parts of the equipment; noise level generally low. Visual Acuity – Close and distance vision abilities; adjust focus. Background Screening – All candidates must pass a pre‑employment background check. Governmental Contract Responsibilities Goodwill’s Commercial Services division holds contracts for cleaning services at some federal government buildings.
