The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Infectious Diseases physician to join the faculty of the Texas Center for Infectious Disease (TCID) in San Antonio, Texas. This is an exceptional opportunity to practice at one of the nation's only dedicated tuberculosis hospital while participating in medical education, public health, and clinical and translational research.
Position Highlights:
This unique academic position combines inpatient and outpatient infectious diseases practice with opportunities to care for patients with tuberculosis (TB) and Hansen's disease (leprosy). Faculty work alongside nationally recognized experts in tuberculosis and mycobacterial diseases while collaborating with the Heartland National TB Center, state and local public health agencies, and multidisciplinary specialists.

The Texas Center for Infectious Disease (TCID) is a nationally recognized, 75-bed specialty hospital dedicated to the care of patients with tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases. It serves as one of the largest referral centers in the United States for patients with complicated, multidrug-resistant, and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis.
Patients are referred from throughout Texas and neighboring states for specialized medical management, complex antimicrobial therapy, and multidisciplinary care.
In addition, faculty participate in specialized outpatient programs dedicated to tuberculosis and Hansen's disease, providing continuity of care across the spectrum of disease.

Position Highlights:
This unique academic position combines inpatient and outpatient infectious diseases practice with opportunities to care for patients with tuberculosis (TB) and Hansen's disease (leprosy). Faculty work alongside nationally recognized experts in tuberculosis and mycobacterial diseases while collaborating with the Heartland National TB Center, state and local public health agencies, and multidisciplinary specialists.
The successful candidate will have opportunities to participate in:
- Comprehensive inpatient management of patients with tuberculosis and associated medical conditions.
- Outpatient management of tuberculosis, latent tuberculosis infection, and Hansen's disease (leprosy) through specialized referral clinics.
- Academic teaching and mentorship within an expanding medical school and graduate medical education program.
- Clinical, translational, epidemiologic, implementation science, and public health research.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provide inpatient care for patients with pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis, drug-resistant tuberculosis, and other complex infectious diseases admitted to TCID.
- Manage common coexisting medical conditions including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, anemia, psychiatric illness, and substance use disorders.
- Direct and optimize anti-tuberculosis therapy, including management of multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis.
- Participate in outpatient specialty clinics focused on:
- Tuberculosis
- Latent tuberculosis infection
- Hansen's disease (leprosy)
- Perform admission evaluations, history and physical examinations, and formulate comprehensive treatment plans.
- Conduct daily multidisciplinary inpatient rounds with nursing, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation, and social work.
- Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention initiatives.
- Share weekday, weekend, and after-hours telephone call responsibilities within an established physician group.
- Daily clinic patient volume: 12-15
- Daily hospital patient volume: 10-14
Academic Responsibilities:
As faculty within the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine , physicians actively participate in education across the continuum of medical training.

- Internal Medicine residents
- Infectious Diseases fellows
- Rotating learners from partner institutions including the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), and the Texas Department of State Health Services.
- Participate in bedside teaching, formal lectures, case conferences, journal clubs, and multidisciplinary educational conferences.
- Mentor trainees interested in infectious diseases, tuberculosis, mycobacterial diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, clinical microbiology, and public health.
