R&D- Chemist II

Overview The Chemist II within the Military and Transportation team of General Industrial Division is responsible for activities related to developing new technologies and new platforms in high performance coatings. Responsibilities Working closely with a mentor chemist to develop, reformulate, maintain and enhance products through planning, executing, and analyzing experiments with clear and accurate results. Display a basic working knowledge of the use of chemicals, raw materials, substrate preparation and use of instruments commonly found in a lab environment. Input data, data analysis, and technical documentation daily into lab books or a database. Function under substantial supervision, but may lead individual or group projects. Product development and/or enhancements with consistent performance and quality. Utilize advanced technologies to develop products that demonstrate improvements perceptible to consumers and desirable to them. Perform basic paint making processes and meet manufacturers specifications. Perform basic coating formulations, applications and physical/performance testing methods. Provide timely and accurate conclusions based on data to help resolve field complaints, raw material issues, manufacturing problems, and support existing and new product development. Experience with solvent-borne and water-borne acrylic, alkyd, epoxy and urethane chemistries. Maintain excellent organizational and communication skills. Apply and troubleshoot coatings in general industrial contexts. Qualifications BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Must meet ITAR U.S. Person requirements – Sherwin-Williams maintains ITAR-compliant operations in United States based facilities. This position requires U.S. Person status. ITAR defines U.S. Person as U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents, or foreign nationals granted refugee or asylee status. Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must have at least 3 years of experience with reactive chemistry – specifically urethane and epoxy coatings. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience working with DOE, Minitab, Product Vision, Microsoft Office. Additional Details Travel Requirements: Up to 20% Domestic and International.
