Special Agent Supervisor - Special Skills

Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Special Agent-in-Charge (SAC), the Special Agent Supervisor (SAS) plans, organizes, directs, and supervises sworn and non-sworn personnel assigned to the Professional Standards Group (PSG) and the Background Investigations Unit (BIU). The SAS exercises first-line supervisory authority over Special Agents, Special Investigators, retired annuitants, and professional staff, and is responsible for the oversight of and conducts sensitive internal affairs investigations, criminal investigations, and peace officer and non-sworn background investigations. The SAS ensures compliance with Department of Justice policies, Division of Law Enforcement (DLE) General Orders, POST standards, CalHR requirements, and applicable laws and labor agreements.

Working Conditions

This position may require frequent travel in and out of state.

Relocation expenses will not be paid by DOJ.

Special Requirements

• The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
• The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.
• The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.
• The position(s) require(s) Psychological Evaluation clearance prior to being hired.

Candidates must have an active  California POST Basic or Specialized Certificate which meets Penal Codes 830.1, 830.2 or 830.3in order to be considered. A copy of current POST profile must be provided.

Please note, all new to state employees will be given the minimum salary of the classification. For current state employees and/or those with reinstatement rights, your salary will be determined in accordance with the applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Education Incentive

Agents with an Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, or Intermediate POST certificate will receive a 2.5% salary differential of the base pay. Agents with a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Advance POST certificate will receive a 5% salary differential of the base pay, as per  Pay Differential 244.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Prior experience in an acting supervisory or supervisory position.  Knowledge of criminal, administrative, and background investigation processes, knowledge of the different divisions of the Department of Justice and services provided by each. Excellent personnel management skills; ability to communicate effectively with internal department stakeholders, and the public (both orally and in writing), knowledge of the Peace Officer Bill of Rights (POBR) and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
