JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision, - assists lead teacher with instructional activities to provide learning experiences to individual and small groups of students.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assists instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises.
2. Assists individual students and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up learning activities.
3. Monitors and assists students in a variety of instructional activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional concepts by instructional personnel.
4. Participates in training and assists in integrating Muckleshoot language and culture in the classroom setting.
5. Participates in school meetings, IEP/IFSP meetings, parent conferences, and in-services or other trainings; supports parent involvement in the classroom.
6. Supervises students in a variety of educational settings for up to 30-45 minutes at a time.
7. Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior and an appreciation of human diversity.
8. Assists in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids for use with individual or small groups of students.
9. Maintains a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and information
10. Requisitions, stores and maintains an appropriate inventory of textbooks, instructional materials, supplies and equipment.
11. May drive a van or automobile to transport students.
12. Assists lead teacher by using good judgment regarding appropriate action to assist injured or physically ill students.
13. Assists in maintaining an orderly, attractive and positive learning environment.
14. Loads and unloads students safely at designated stops and on field trips, helps to buckle children into the supplied five-point restraint.
15. Completes transportation records such as number of students transported, mileage, special runs, route directions, etc.
16. May transport children with special learning needs and physical challenges; may operate power lifts to load and unload students in wheelchairs; and may strap and tie down wheelchairs to ensure student safety.
17. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Required:

• Early Childhood Education Certificate or A Child Development (CDA) credential ( Tribal members only : must be willing to obtain within 1 year of employment ).
• One (1) year of professional experience working with children in preschool, daycare, or similar setting.

Special Requirements:

• Must pass a criminal background check, a drug screen and meet all health and immunization requirements.
• Must be able to obtain satisfactory results on a pre-employment physical examination, including tuberculosis screening.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

Skill In: Effective communication with students, parents, or guardians, staff and administrators; working with children in an understanding, patient, receptive and confident manner; organizing activities in keeping with the maturity and attention span of assigned students; following written and oral instructions; managing student behavior; using standard office equipment, including personal computer.

Knowledge of: Basic concepts of child development and developmental behavior characteristics; basic effective behavior management techniques; rules and procedures for child/student safety.

Ability to: Read and write; follow verbal and written instructions; work with students in a positive and confident manner; observe safe work practices; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships; arrive to work in a timely manner; attend required training; maintain confidentiality.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class .   

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.                       

Licenses or Certifications Required

A valid Washington State driver’s license is required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe. A valid Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR certificate and Food Handler’s permit may be required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.

The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe is a federally recognized Indian tribe whose membership is composed of descendants of the Duwamish and Upper Puyallup people who inhabited Central Puget Sound for thousands of years before non-Indian settlement. The Tribe’s name is derived from the native name for the prairie on which the Muckleshoot Reservation was established. Following the Reservation’s establishment in 1857, the Tribe and its members came to be known as Muckleshoot, rather than by the historic tribal names of their Duwamish and Upper Puyallup ancestors. Today, the United States recognizes the Muckleshoot Tribe as a tribal successor to the Duwamish and Upper Puyallup bands from which the Tribe’s membership descends.
