The qualifications required for the Electroplating Chemist position are:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- An advanced degree is preferred but not required.
Experience:
- 2+ years of experience in electroplating, chemical finishing, or related fields.
- Hands-on experience with plating processes (e.g., nickel, cadmium, zinc, chromium, anodizing, or conversion coatings).
- Familiarity with NADCAP requirements and aerospace/defense plating specifications is preferred.
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in electroplating, anodizing, or aerospace chemical processing.
- Experience with NADCAP AC7108 audits and compliance is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with AS9100 quality systems and AMS/MIL specifications is required.
Skills:
- Strong analytical chemistry background (wet chemistry, titration, HACH spectroscopy, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, X-Ray Machine coating thickness and material analysis ).
- Knowledge of plating equipment, rectifiers, and solution maintenance.
- Ability to interpret technical specifications and quality requirements.
- Proficiency in documentation, data analysis, and report writing.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
- Experience preparing for and supporting NADCAP audits.
- Ability to interpret and apply AMS, MIL, ASTM, and OEM specifications.
The key responsibilities of the Electroplating Chemist include:
Process Control & Maintenance:
- Perform routine chemical analysis (e.g., titrations, pH, conductivity, spectroscopy) of plating baths, rinses, and associated solutions.
- Monitor, adjust, and document bath chemistries to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Maintain chemical records and ensure traceability per NADCAP/AS9100 requirements.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting:
- Provide day-to-day technical support for production plating operations.
- Investigate and resolve plating defects, adhesion failures, and thickness variations.
- Support root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
Compliance & Quality:
- Ensure plating processes meet industry and customer specifications (e.g., AMS, MIL, ASTM standards).
- Support internal and external audits (NADCAP, ISO, AS9100, customer).
- Develop and maintain control plans, work instructions, and lab procedures.
Research & Development:
- Evaluate new plating chemistries, additives, and technologies.
- Support process improvement projects to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve sustainability.
- Collaborate with engineering on new product introduction and special customer requests.
Safety & Environmental Compliance:
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals in compliance with OSHA, EPA, DEP, and state and local regulations.
- Conduct safety training for laboratory and plating personnel.
- Actively participate in the site's environmental, health, and safety (EHS) program.
Technical & Production Support:
- Troubleshoot plating defects, adhesion issues, or coating nonconformances and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Collaborate with production, engineering, and quality teams on new part qualification, first article processing (FAI), and process validations.
R&D and Continuous Improvement:
- Lead process improvement projects aligned with lean manufacturing and zero-defect initiatives.
- Support development of new plating processes to meet emerging aerospace specifications.
NADCAP & Specification Support:
- Support NADCAP AC7108 audits, internal audits, and customer audits.
- Ensure compliance with specifications such as AMS, MIL, and other aerospace plating standards such as:
○ MIL-A-8625 Type II ( Sulfuric Acid) Anodizing
○ AMS-QQ-P-416 Cadmium Electroplating
○ AMS2700 Passivation of Corrosion Resistant Steels
○ MIL-DTL-5541 Chemical Conversion Coating
○ ASTN-B-117 Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus
- Conduct periodic system audits to verify adherence to customer and NADCAP requirements.
- Conduct chemicals inventory, supplier survey, and purchasing etc....
