Outpatient Pediatric Occupational Therapist

Summary The Occupational Therapist reports directly to the Clinical Manager and/or Assistant Clinical Manager and may receive clinical guidance from senior staff or clinical specialists. The therapist performs comprehensive examinations of body structure to determine functional impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions, establishes diagnosis and prognosis, develops an individualized plan of care, implements treatment interventions, and performs ongoing evaluations throughout the episode of care. Responsibilities Communication – demonstrate the highest level of communication and professionalism with patients, caregivers, rehabilitation staff, providers, and other health care professionals; exhibit effective and professional verbal and non‑verbal communication; communicate clearly, respectfully, and honestly; adjust communication to the listener’s level of understanding. Examine and evaluate patients. Establish diagnosis, prognosis, and individualized plans of care. Implement treatment intervention based on plan of care, considering precautions, indications, and contraindications. Direct and coordinate patients’ rehabilitation plan of care. Evaluate patients’ progress and revise goals and plan of care accordingly. Educate and train patients and caregivers. Anticipate and communicate discharge/home needs and resources. Complete documentation and charges accurately and timely in compliance with department policy. Complete clinical documentation reflecting eligibility and medical necessity of services in compliance with professional and regulatory standards. Make recommendations and referrals for additional diagnostic testing or services. Consistently apply evidence‑based practice to all aspects of clinical care. Seek additional guidance when necessary to assure safe and effective patient care. Comply with hospital and departmental policies and guidelines. Participate in strategic departmental quality improvement initiatives. Provide education to other hospital departments, students, and outside agencies or schools. Demonstrate ability to flex schedule based on department, patient, and caregiver need. Determine priorities according to departmental and patient care needs. Participate in community‑based professional events. Participate in ongoing educational activities. Support and promote departmental teamwork. Complete mandatory departmental and hospital training. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited institution (required). Master’s or Doctorate‑level degree in Occupational Therapy preferred. State license issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health (required). New graduates considered; clinical experience in program‑specific settings preferred. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Fit for duty as documented by OSHA standards and program specific needs. Independent Action Performs independently within the department’s policies and practices; refers specific complex problems to ACM or Clinical Manager when clarification is required; independently sets goals for professional development. Membership and Involvement Membership and involvement in discipline‑specific professional organizations and/or other clinically relevant organizations strongly encouraged. Supervisory Responsibility No direct supervision; however, pursuant to Rhode Island Rules and Regulations for licensing Occupational Therapists, a licensed O.T. shall be responsible for the supervision of certified occupational therapy assistants, supportive personnel, and students to ensure patient safety. Provides supervision of assistants, aides, therapists, and volunteers, including cosigning notes, reviewing treatment plans and goals.
