Duties

Help

• Rebuild hydraulic lifting to manufacturer specifications.
• Repair mechanical systems to restore equipment to fully operational status.
• Troubleshoot engines and transmissions to isolate mechanical and systemic failures.
• Operate all types of equipment to determine malfunctions, diagnose and repair.
• Perform preshop analysis of heavy mobile and engineering equipment to determine maintenance needed on equipment and make repairs.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
• This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
• This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
• This is a Term position scheduled to last 1 year 1 day. Term appointments may be extended beyond of six (6) years, up to eight (8) years. With DoD approval, Term appointments may be extended beyond eight (8) years.
• Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a Term appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance for access to Depot Production Computer System.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common repairing mechanical systems to restore equipment to fully operational status, interpreting technical manuals for diagnosing and repairing multi-system set ups and troubleshooting engines and transmissions to isolate mechanical and systemic failures. I can perform preventative maintenance checks to maintain operational readiness. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

• Physical Effort: Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching, handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and often similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools, and lifting/moving of heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists and cranes. The employee works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods, e.g., works on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions, or performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting.
• Working Conditions: Works inside and outside. While inside, is exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. While outside, may work in bad weather, mud or snow, and wet or icy areas. Frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and from hard, damp floors or ground. Typically works on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy.
  Frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Often exposed to possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids and lubricants.
  Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators and protective clothing, some of which may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
