Coney Island Preparatory Public Charter School – Brooklyn, New York Dean of Students – The Dean of Students (DOS) focuses on building a safe, equitable, and supportive student culture by implementing restorative justice practices and managing robust culture data systems. The DOS collaborates with teachers, families, leadership, social workers, and the inclusive education team to meet the holistic needs of all students. Using behavior and attendance metrics, the DOS designs targeted intervention systems, writes data‑informed behavior improvement plans, and coaches teachers on implementation. The DOS shifts school culture from punitive measures to restorative circles, mediation, and community‑building frameworks. Refining tracking systems and analyzing trends ensures equity in discipline and influences scholar success. The Dean of Students is hired by the Principal and reports to the Vice Principal of Culture. What You’ll Be Asked To Do Build a diverse, equitable, and inclusive school community : Work with Principal and Vice Principal, collaborate with Culture and Operations Teams to plan and implement student orientation; create, evaluate and continuously improve overall school culture, with an emphasis on an academically focused, joyful, safe environment that fosters positive relationships; build community through event planning and hosting; coordinate incentive systems and key family events; lead community meetings and whole‑school events; facilitate professional development sessions on trauma‑informed practices; proactively plan systems to drive positive student behavior; monitor uniforms and dress code compliance. Collaborate and co‑lead : Use a trauma‑informed lens to address and manage behaviors; help students internalize PRIDE values; monitor behavior; support teachers by addressing problems promptly; partner with parents and families to create behavior plans; manage the dean referral process from classroom support to restorative consequences; oversee suspensions and related processes. Deliver exceptional academic results : Collaborate with school leadership to observe and support teacher development; assist in advisory groups; provide classroom management support and coaching; coach teachers on trauma‑informed systems; serve on grade teams to ensure effective collaboration. Professional demeanor to foster relationships with staff, scholars, and families while demonstrating value of diversity and inclusivity. Cultural competency for low‑income communities and willingness to examine biases. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree and NYS teaching certification strongly preferred. Lead teaching experience highly preferred. Background in organizational systems (SchoolRunner, Excel, Google Sheets) a plus.
