Individual will work in Pontiac, Southfield, and Walled Lake. Make a measurable impact on community health. The Oakland County Health Division is seeking a Nutrition Specialist to support our Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program. In this role, you’ll work directly with families to provide nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and community referrals. What You’ll Do Under limited supervision, the Nutrition Specialist provides direct nutrition counseling, breastfeeding promotion and technical health screening services in WIC clinics, and community settings. You’ll play a key role in helping individuals and families understand nutrition, access supportive programs, and maintain healthy lifestyles. Key responsibilities include: • Providing nutrition counseling and care plans for eligible WIC families • Offering breastfeeding promotion and education activities • Referring participants to appropriate Health Division, County, or community resources • Performing health screenings and minor laboratory tests at WIC clinics and community organizations • Verifying program eligibility and general office duties Why You’ll Love This Job • You’ll make a real impact every day. County employment offers the chance to build a long-term career while doing work that truly matters.## **Minimum Qualifications**EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESREQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS1. A. Have an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in the dietetic technician program with a clinical or community emphasis as approved by the American Dietetic Association; ANDB. Possess registration as a Dietetic Technician with the Commission on Dietetic Registration; **OR**NOTE: Applicants possessing transcripts from a college or university outside of the United States will be required to provide documentation of degree equivalency from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (). The degree evaluation will be required for application processing.2. Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in in Foods and Nutrition or Dietetics as approved by the American Dietetic Association.3. Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license. Out of Country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’slicense before the hire date.4. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.5. Successfully complete the six month probationary period.May function as a leader over lower level employees during special projects as assigned by the supervisor. Instructs and assists in work performed.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSProvides nutrition counseling and health screening in normal diet and meal planning for selected populations of County residents in Health Division nutrition programs, clinics, and classes.Conducts nutritional and biometric assessments for selected populations and graphs data.Maintains service records and required reports of activities relative to nutrition programs operated by the Health Division.Refers nutrition program participants to other Health Division, County, or community programs for appropriate services.Assists professional staff in ensuring the accuracy and appropriateness of reports and data generated at both the local and central agency level following established procedures.Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESParticipates in ongoing educational programs to maintain familiarity with current principles and practices of nutrition.Assists in the development, preparation, and implementation of educational programs.Assists in organizing health education materials and audiovisual aids and displays.Drafts selected news releases under the direction of the Health Education section.ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSAbility to communicate to accurately convey information.WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed in a typical office, medical office or classroom environment.IMPORTANT NOTE: The primary purpose of this job description is to set a fair and equitable salary range for this job classification. Some knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques in the field of nutrition and dietetics.3. Reasonable knowledge and ability to apply principles of nutrition.4. Reasonable ability to successfully read graphs and measuring devices.5. Reasonable knowledge of federal and state food program regulations.6. Reasonable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the general public.7. Reasonable ability to counsel, instruct, and direct people.8. Reasonable ability to follow oral and written instructions.9. Reasonable ability to prepare and present oral or written reports to supervisors or other interested groups and individuals.10. Familiar with current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS1. Must maintain Dietetic Technician registration.2. Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator or chauffeur's license.3.
