Title: Attorney - Assistant Public Defender I - Hampton State Role Title: Legal Services Officer II Hiring Range: $77,976.00 + State Benefits Agency: Indigent Defense Commission Location: Hampton 325 Agency Website: Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Overview The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) is looking for an Assistant Public Defender I/II to protect and defend the rights and dignity of indigent clients through zealous, compassionate, high‑quality legal advocacy. This role is central to the Commission’s mission of criminal‑justice reform, operating in a fast‑paced, courtroom‑based environment in Hampton. Responsibilities Conduct client and witness interviews. Collaborate with staff investigators to investigate cases. File pre‑trial and post‑trial motions and litigate them. Notice appropriate appealable issues. Try cases in the General District, Juvenile, Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts. See clients in jail promptly and maintain regular communication with clients, family members, and approved parties. Minimum Qualifications A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and admission to the Virginia State Bar, or acceptance to take the July 2026 Virginia Bar Exam pending licensure. Active interest in indigent defense, criminal‑justice reform, and social justice. Willingness to try cases and desire to improve as a trial attorney. Ability to learn rapidly and incorporate feedback. Strong time‑management and deadline‑tracking skills. Excellent written and oral communication. Ability to multi‑task, prioritize, and remain organized. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to all courts and regional jails. Knowledge of criminal law and evidence. Additional Considerations Prior experience defending criminal cases will be strongly considered. Applicants hired before obtaining Virginia bar licensure will begin as Law Clerks with a salary of $65,158.00 and will receive the Assistant Public Defender I title and salary upon successful licensure.
