Theatre Teacher w/ English Certification Musical Theatre Program at Proctors Overview Unique educational experience that immerses students in the professional‑level facilities and staff at Proctors Theatre in downtown Schenectady. Our teachers and staff work directly with professionals within the industry to create an engaging, fun and focused academic and performance environment which prepares students for higher education in a number of fields and to foster a lifelong love of all performing arts. Students train in music, dance, theatre, and media (ELA – Mediaworks curriculum), gaining hands‑on experience, and building the confidence, skills and discipline needed to unlock their creative potential. A program that is designed to enhance, not replace, other school arts programs; students remain connected to their main campus while gaining access to expanded training opportunities and professional exposure that deepen their artistic development. Role and Responsibilities of Theatre / English Teacher The Musical Theater Program Theatre / English teacher will support the developmental and academic needs of diverse learners at the high school level and must have a passion and tireless commitment to ensuring that all students learn. We are looking for a dedicated Theatre / ELA teacher who will work collaboratively within our dynamic and engaging team. The teacher will develop and support curriculum, activities and instructional practices designed to introduce learners to the fundamentals of theatre and musical theatre, including acting, storytelling, and stagecraft. Students will use movement, voice, language, and ideas to explore roles, characters, relationships, and situations. The literacy skills that students develop through drama will assist them in learning to think, move, speak, and act confidently. In addition, in the Mediaworks classes, the teacher will use ELA curriculum standards through the lens of music, theatre and performance; making the work accessible and engaging for students and articulating to students the connections between reading, writing and speaking. Reading includes a range of stories, articles, poems, videos, etc. in fiction and nonfiction form. Writing includes creative and informational narrative, argument and literary analysis. The Mediaworks course also emphasizes all speaking and listening standards with performance‑based projects. The teacher will plan culturally responsive lessons and units by utilizing data to inform instruction and differentiate lessons to meet the diverse learning needs of all students while providing continuous feedback for student growth. This position requires a high degree of flexibility, a caring attitude and a culturally responsive equity‑based mindset. Transfer mastery of content to students by leveraging their background knowledge and experiences. Implement a variety of strategies to facilitate learning amongst diverse learners and social justice topics. Embrace and lift student strengths, voice and identity to create a learning environment that is highly engaging and relevant to students. Use teaching approaches that are driven by innovation and equity. Facilitate classroom interactions that foster intellectual, cultural and social‑emotional learning. Be an independent thinker who thrives in interdependent environments. Organize interactive workshops, coordinate school productions or performances, and incorporate elements of literacy and language development into theatre lessons. Engage families in support of the school’s goals by communicating student progress, upcoming events, and programmatic changes. Maintain an open and cooperative relationship with students, colleagues, and parents.
