CTS Excavations LLC is a growing excavation, utility, and heavy civil construction company serving projects throughout Alabama and surrounding markets. Our work includes mass excavation, site development, underground utilities, grading, earthwork, and other heavy civil construction services.

As CTS continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced Head Mechanic / Diesel Mechanic / Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic to take a lead role in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing our growing fleet of heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and support vehicles.

We are looking for a dependable, experienced mechanic who takes pride in keeping equipment safe, reliable, and productive and who can work independently while supporting our field operations.

Job Summary

The Head Mechanic / Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic will be responsible for the preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of CTS Excavations' heavy equipment, diesel-powered vehicles, trucks, trailers, and other fleet assets.

This position will serve as a lead mechanic , helping ensure equipment is properly maintained, safely operated, and returned to service as quickly as possible.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience working on heavy construction equipment and diesel engines and be comfortable diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computerized equipment issues.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

\n
• Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled service on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and fleet vehicles.
\n
• Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brakes, steering systems, and other mechanical components.
\n
• Troubleshoot equipment breakdowns and determine the appropriate repair strategy.
\n
• Respond to equipment breakdowns at active construction projects when needed.
\n
• Perform field repairs and emergency repairs to minimize equipment downtime.
\n
• Inspect equipment and identify potential mechanical problems before they result in major breakdowns.
\n
• Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records for all assigned equipment.
\n
• Document repairs, parts used, labor performed, equipment hours, and other required information.
\n
• Communicate equipment condition, repair needs, and downtime to management and field leadership.
\n
• Coordinate with the Fleet Operations Manager and project leadership regarding equipment maintenance and repairs.
\n
• Maintain an organized inventory of tools, parts, fluids, filters, and other maintenance supplies.
\n
• Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and professional appearance of the service truck, tools, and work areas.
\n
• Follow manufacturer maintenance recommendations and company maintenance procedures.
\n
• Perform inspections and safety checks on equipment before returning it to service.
\n
• Assist with equipment mobilization, demobilization, and preparation for transportation between project locations.
\n
• Help identify recurring equipment issues and recommend solutions to improve equipment reliability.
\n
• Maintain a safe working environment and follow all CTS Excavations safety policies and procedures.
\n
• Comply with OSHA, DOT, company, and applicable federal/state safety requirements.
\n
• Maintain required licenses and a safe driving record.
\n
• Work extended hours, weekends, and overtime when operational demands require it.
\n
• Perform other duties as assigned.
\n

Responsibilities may include:

\n
• Provide mechanical leadership and direction to other mechanics or maintenance personnel.
\n
• Help establish and maintain preventive maintenance schedules.
\n
• Prioritize repairs based on safety, equipment condition, and operational needs.
\n
• Help coordinate parts, vendors, outside repairs, and specialty services when necessary.
\n
• Review equipment maintenance needs with management and recommend repair or replacement options.
\n
• Help track equipment downtime and identify opportunities to improve fleet reliability.
\n
• Train and assist less-experienced mechanics when appropriate.
\n
• Maintain professional communication with operators, supervisors, project managers, and company leadership.
\n

Minimum Qualifications

\n
• Minimum 5 years of experience as a diesel mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic, or similar position.
\n
• Strong experience repairing and maintaining heavy construction equipment.
\n
• Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair diesel engines and heavy equipment.
\n
• Strong knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and diesel systems.
\n
• Experience performing preventive maintenance and repairs.
\n
• Ability to read and understand equipment service manuals, schematics, and technical information.
\n
• Ability to troubleshoot equipment with minimal supervision.
\n
• Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
\n
• Ability to communicate effectively with field personnel and management.
\n
• Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
\n
• Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and overtime as needed.
\n
• Ability to work independently and prioritize repairs in a fast-paced construction environment.
\n

Preferred Qualifications

\n
• Experience working in excavation, heavy civil construction, utility construction, or site development.
\n
• Formal diesel or heavy equipment mechanic training.
\n
• Experience leading or supervising other mechanics.
\n
• Experience managing preventive maintenance programs for a construction fleet.
\n

Physical Requirements

The position requires working in an active construction and mechanical environment.

The successful candidate must be able to:

\n
• Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, crawl, climb, reach, and work in awkward positions.
\n
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
\n
• Work around heavy construction equipment, trucks, tools, fuels, lubricants, and other jobsite materials.
\n
• Lift and carry tools, parts, and equipment as required.
\n
• Lift up to approximately 75 pounds when necessary.
\n
• Work at heights and around equipment when required.
\n
• Work extended shifts when necessary to respond to equipment breakdowns.
\n
• Safely perform mechanical work in active construction environments.
\n
