Position Description POSITION TITLE: High School Band Teacher TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 11 months SUPERVISOR: Principal FLSA STATUS: Exempt

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the principal, the Band Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing standards-based instrumental music instruction for students. The teacher develops students' musical skills, instrumental techniques, and appreciation for music while creating a positive learning environment that supports academic, social, and emotional growth. The Band Teacher prepares students for performances, marching band, and collaborates with school staff to support the overall instructional program. This job description is intended to accurately reflect the position’s activities and requirements; however, the administration reserves the right to modify, add, or remove duties and assign other duties as necessary. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Instrumental Performance, or related field required. Valid Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Music Education (Instrumental preferred). Experience directing band or instrumental ensembles preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOBS FUNCTIONS:

Plan and deliver engaging instrumental music instruction aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and the Virginia Fine Arts Curriculum Framework. Direct and develop the school's marching band program, including concert band, small ensembles, and other instrumental groups as appropriate. Teach and develop students' skills in instrumental technique, music literacy, interpretation, and performance. Select and prepare appropriate musical repertoire that supports student growth and program goals. Prepare students for color guard, winter guard, marching band, concerts, performances, festivals, and other school or community music events. Plan, organize, and conduct band concerts and performances, including the Winter Concert and Spring Concert, that showcase student learning and musical achievement. Conduct rehearsals and performances that may occur before or after the regular school day as necessary to support the band program. Recruit and encourage student participation in the band program and foster student interest and appreciation for instrumental music. Assess and evaluate student performance and progress using appropriate instructional strategies and assessments. Maintain a structured, organized, and supportive classroom environment conducive to learning and performance. Collaborate with other music staff, teachers, and administrators to support school events, programs, and performances. Communicate effectively with students, parents, and administrators regarding student progress and program activities. Maintain inventory and care of band instruments, uniforms, music materials, equipment, and instructional resources necessary for program operation. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school activities as required. Support school and division initiatives related to student achievement, engagement, and positive school culture. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of instrumental music instruction, band techniques, and music theory. Ability to direct and manage band ensembles and rehearsals. Ability to plan and deliver engaging instruction that supports diverse learners. Strong classroom management and organizational skills. Ability to prepare and conduct student performances and musical events. Effective communication and collaboration skills with students, parents, and staff. Ability to integrate technology and instructional resources into music instruction. Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students and colleagues.

REQUIREMENTS:

Transcripts - Applicants must provide both undergraduate and graduate transcripts; unofficial transcripts are acceptable with the application. References - Applicants must submit two (2) written references; references should be from a current or previous supervisor. References from a supervising teacher or professor are acceptable when there is no relevant prior work history. Teacher Assessment Scores (e.g., Praxis II, etc.) & Teaching License Successful outcomes of the following background investigations/tests are required before any offer of employment can be finalized: Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Investigation State Police Criminal History Investigation Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation Tuberculosis Screening/Test Possession of a valid driver’s license

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a classroom and rehearsal environment requiring the ability to stand, conduct rehearsals, and supervise students for extended periods of time. The position may require lifting or moving musical equipment and instruments.

Possession of a valid driver’s license. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
