Work Schedules:

This position is classified as a full-time Residential Extended Shift position:

• Regular schedule consists of four (4) 12-hour shifts per workweek (48 scheduled hours).  

Work locations will change based on needs of the business. 

• Workdays may include weekdays, evenings, overnight hours, weekends, and holidays based on program needs. 
• Employees are expected to work their assigned schedule and comply with all agency attendance and scheduling policies.

Pay:  

• Base rate: $18.50/hour

• Effective pay: approximately $21.58/hour due to the 4 hours of overtime paid at time-and-a-half during each 12-hour shift.

Summary of Job Functions:

The Direct Support Professional – Residential Extended Shift provides person-centered support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in residential and community settings. This position assists individuals in achieving their personal goals, developing daily living skills, participating in community activities, and maintaining their health and safety while promoting dignity, independence, choice, and meaningful relationships.

The Residential Extended Superimposed Shift position is designed to provide staffing flexibility while maintaining continuity of care throughout The Arc of Anchorage. Employees in this position work an extended shift schedule but will be assigned to different agency settings based on operational needs. The assigned worksite changes from week to week; however, the employee's scheduled shift length remains consistent.

This position is expected to quickly adapt to new environments, support different teams, and provide high-quality, person-centered services that are consistent with each individual's service plan and The Arc of Anchorage's Mission Statement and Guiding Service Principles.

Essential Job Functions: 

• Participates as a team member in the development and implementation of the individual's service plan. 
• Must work closely with the food shopping program coordinator. Must complete the food order by the requested time frame. 
• Plans and prepares nutritious meals and snacks that support the individual’s preferences, dietary needs, health needs, and level of independence.
• Transports the individual to and from activities. 
• Coordinates daily activities (and transportation) with Day Habilitation, Supported Employment, Anchor Rides and other agency/service providers.
• Communicates effectively (and timely) with parents and guardians of the individuals served, supervisor, and other team members.
• Learns and follows all policies, procedures and guidelines of the program and the agency. Adheres to the policies and procedures of the Employee Handbook, Integrated Services Manual, and the Home Standards of Care. Adheres to the agreed upon work schedule.
• Maintains confidentiality.
• Reads safety rules and applies appropriately. Ensures that the environment is safe and free of health hazards. Facilitates safety drills. Maintains a safe environment for the individuals served.
• Handles emergency situations by communicating the appropriate information to designated persons and maintaining a calm and professional manner. Evacuates individuals in the event of an emergency.
• Administers or assists with medications in accordance with individual support plans, agency policy, and applicable requirements; accurately completes all required medication documentation
• Home Organization: Maintains the home and keeps the home in good and clean condition. Informs supervisor of the maintenance needs of the home in a timely manner.
• Supports individuals in exercising their human rights.
• Promotes the self-sufficiency and independence of individuals served specific to their abilities. Encourages participation in community activities and assists individuals served in planning activities of their choice. Teaches daily living and personal hygiene skills to residents to include: cooking, cleaning, laundry, hygiene, shopping, communication and problem solving to their highest level of autonomy.
• Meets high productivity standards relating to meeting deadlines, service delivery, service documentation, and other program-specific standards/requirements.
• Promotes and implements supports in accordance with each individual's Personal Assessment as well as The Arc's Mission Statement and Value Guiding Service Principles.
• Communicates effectively (and timely) with parents and guardians of the individuals served, supervisor, and other team members.
• Learns and follows all policies, procedures and guidelines of the program and the agency. Adheres to the policies and procedures of the Employee Handbook, Integrated Services Manual, and the Home Standards of Care. Adheres to the agreed upon work schedule.

Education and Experience:  

Required: 

• High School Diploma/GED. 
• Basic level computer use and experience with Microsoft Office required 
• Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English with individuals served, coworkers, families, guardians, and community partners.
• Valid Alaska driver license
• Driving record that meets our insurance requirements
• Continuous use of a vehicle during work shifts with proof of insurance
• Ability to safely operate agency vehicles, including wheelchair-accessible vehicles, and safely transport individuals with varying mobility needs.

Preferred: 

• Six (6) months social service/life experience with individuals who experience an intellectual or developmental disability. Customer Service may be substituted for direct experience where applicable. 

Required Licenses, Clearances & Trainings:

• Background checks as defined by licensing agencies
• Current TB test/clearance
• Pass mandatory agency trainings (Corporate Compliance, Mandatory Reporting, CPR, etc.)
• Successfully completes and maintains required medication administration training and competency requirements.

Equipment Use:

• Routine use of standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and other office-related devices. 
• Agency vehicles, including wheelchair-accessible vans and other accessible transportation vehicles. 
• Wheelchair lifts, ramps, wheelchair securement systems, and other adaptive transportation equipment. 
• Mechanical lift devices used for safe transfers. 
• Wheelchairs, gait belts, transfer boards, walkers, and other mobility or adaptive equipment. 
• Household appliances and equipment, including stoves, ovens, microwaves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and other kitchen and laundry appliances used to support individuals with daily living activities. 
• Electronic documentation systems, communication devices, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.

Working Conditions: 

• The worksite for this job may be in a residential or community setting.

 

Physical Demands:

• Standing and moving about for extended periods of time
• Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction
• Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard
• Ability to see within normal parameters
• Ability to hear within normal range
• Ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
• Ability to safely assist individuals with varying levels of mobility, including using mechanical lift devices, gait belts, transfer boards, and other adaptive equipment in accordance with agency policy and safe transfer techniques. 
• Ability to safely operate wheelchair-accessible vehicles, including operating wheelchair lifts or ramps and securing wheelchairs and other mobility devices for transportation.
