Civilian Investigator - PROMOTIONAL

Overview THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT, FULL-TIME, REGULAR (NON-PROBATIONARY) EMPLOYEES OF THE LOUISVILLE METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT. The purpose of this position is to perform routine investigative and case management work. The investigator clarifies facts, conducts research activities, and apprehends persons guilty of criminal offenses. This position reports to the Office of Sexual and Physical Investigations (OSPI). Responsibilities Query the National Crime Information Center, Kentucky Law Information Network Systems, and local court or public safety systems for related information. Complete and process forms, documents, and correspondence according to established procedures. Explain and provide information to citizens regarding laws, statutes, ordinances, codes, rules and regulations. Interview witnesses, victims, and suspects involved in investigations. Complete thorough background investigations using law enforcement tools. Assist in investigations as directed. Comply with incident reporting standards. Provide testimony in court when needed. Assist sworn investigators with drafting and preparing warrants. Perform related work as assigned. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology or related discipline. Two (2) years of experience as a criminal investigator or a sworn officer in a law enforcement agency, specializing in the investigation of criminal activity. Equivalency: an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be substituted. Other Minimum Requirements Must not have been convicted of a felony or have any criminal action pending against them. An applicant may be disqualified for multiple misdemeanors, an unacceptable criminal record, or multiple traffic violations. Must submit to a pre‑employment drug screening. Must submit to a pre‑employment polygraph test. Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check. Must provide one's own source of transportation. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history. Must work a varied schedule. Must not have retired, resigned, or separated from employment with a law enforcement agency under investigation or due to pending or final disciplinary actions. Must be willing to complete additional training as required/requested by supervisory staff, including willingness to travel. Ability to exercise discretion with confidential information as required by State law and department policy. Applicants who have illegally bought or used marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within six months of application will be disqualified. Applicants who have illegally sold marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within one year of application will be disqualified. Applicants who have illegally bought, sold, or used any controlled substance or narcotic drug, other than marijuana, without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified. Physical Demands Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
