Engineering Associate II – Electrical Substation Design Location: Austin, TX 78744 Pay Rate: $40.00/hour Schedule: Monday–Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM About the Role We are seeking an Engineering Associate II with experience in electrical substation design and familiarity with high‑voltage electrical transmission systems. This role involves managing multiple priorities while leading the development of scopes of work for electrical transmission capital improvement projects. Selected candidate will use AutoCAD to develop conceptual substation physical layouts and one‑line drawings while collaborating with engineering and field personnel to create scoping deliverables that support project cost estimating and design activities. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative team environment and values a strong safety culture. Job Description General Overview Conducts engineering studies and computations. Develops designs and cost estimates. Lays out drafting work. Correlates/compiles data. Conducts and analyzes tests and diagnoses and evaluates equipment performance. May direct the work of craftsmen or technicians. May assist less experienced engineers or others. Investigates and analyzes problems and develops appropriate solutions. Drafts reports. Receives assistance on unusual or complex features. Conducts moderately complex tests of instruments, materials, equipment, and controls to determine operating characteristics. Develops solutions or improvements, and/or verifies accuracy of data. Ensures accurate and beneficial data is acquired and recorded. Prepares reports, operating instructions and project outlines in connection with engineering assignments. Follows appropriate business procedures. Applies project management techniques. Plans and designs engineering projects involving relatively few complex features. Performs engineering and design work. Conducts field analysis, inspections and performance tests. Records, compiles, and reports information. Drafts specifications as required for projects. Completes related computations and drafts schematics and diagrams. Develops testing plans. Interprets engineering specifications. Coordinates project reviews and implementation plans between individuals and sections. Ensures timely communications occur, as needed, on project activities. Maintains knowledge of engineering principles and enhances knowledge of equipment and systems. Gathers engineering information by traveling independently to various locations (substations, power plants, water systems, etc.) as necessary. In accordance with approved Supply Management processes and procedures, serves as owners representative for outside engineering contracts. May perform confined space entry. May interpret basic engineering drawings or manufacturers specifications for field personnel. Provides timely reports which communicate all pertinent information to the responsible engineer. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, engineering physics, biosystems engineering, mathematical science, physical science or related science plus one or more years of post‑Bachelor's engineering experience relating to the area of engineering specialization required to perform the job. Driver's license. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of engineering principles. Knowledge of applicable laws, principles, standards, codes, and documentation specific to the area of engineering specialization required to perform the job. Knowledge of project management methods and concepts. Knowledge of budgeting, cost management and cost estimation. Skill in analyzing and solving complex problems. Skill in verbal and written communication. Skill in designing, interpreting diagrams, schematics, and drawings. Skill in developing scopes of work, budgetary estimates, material lists, and requisitions. Basic skill level in document management systems. Intermediate skill level in office productivity applications (such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.). Intermediate skill in reading and interpreting diagrams and prints. Skill in interpreting engineering drawings and specifications for field personnel. Skill in analyzing reports for quality assurance. Ability to articulate complex, technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences. Ability to coordinate project reviews and implementation plans. Ability to work in a team environment. Ability to balance competing and high priority work demands. Work Environment Work hours are spent in an office environment, industrial, plant, construction and/or field environment. Works in close proximity to energized high‑voltage electrical equipment. Work involves exposure to noise. Work involves exposure to various and sometimes extreme weather conditions. Works at heights up to 450 feet. Work involves call‑out as necessary. Work involves exposure to high‑speed rotating machinery. Work involves exposure to high temperature/high pressure vessels. Physical Demands Work involves frequent finger/hand manipulation in using a keyboard and mouse. Work involves frequent standing and/or walking. Work involves climbing, crawling, crouching or other non‑sitting positions less than 20% of the time. Work involves climbing of ladders less than 20% of the time. Work may involve confined space entry less than 20% of the time.
