REDWOOD CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE: MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair and construction of school facilities, machines and equipment; perform skilled or semi-skilled duties in one or more of the building and maintenance trades, including electrical, plumbing, locksmithing and carpentry.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Perform a variety of routine semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of District buildings, grounds and equipment.

Assist in the performance of skilled maintenance tasks as assigned.

Assist in routine carpentry work in the alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings, partitions, cabinets, floors, roofs, doors, windows, wood fixtures and furniture; assist in the assembling and installation of chalkboards, shelves, partitions and furniture.

Service, maintain and perform adjustments and routine repair work to District equipment.

Assist in routine repairs to electrical wiring, switches, outlets, fixtures and motors. Assist in mixing, pouring and finishing concrete.

Assist in installing and making emergency repairs and adjustments to plumbing fixtures and equipment including pipes, washers and gaskets, faucets, floats and valves.

Assist with minor repairs to and monitor pressure boiler systems and water and sewer lines.

Clean and perform routine adjustments to heating and air conditioning units; start and shut-down HVAC systems.

Repair and replace broken windows; repute windows and repair holes in walls.

Repair floor and ceiling tile; install, repair and maintain door locks, hinges and thresholds; repair surfaces and other areas of school facilities.

Weld metal parts together using arc and acetylene welding processes.

Assist with grounds maintenance duties on athletic fields and indoor and outdoor athletic activities areas as assigned.

Provide work direction to working crews as assigned and check completed work. Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Basic methods, practices and materials used in several of the building trades including electrical, plumbing, locksmithing and carpentry repairs.

Safe working methods and procedures.

Safe use and operation of a variety of tools and equipment and maintenance and repair work.

ABILITY TO:

Perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair and construction of school facilities, machines and equipment.

Perform skilled or semi-skilled duties in one or more of the building and maintenance trades, including electrical, plumbing, locksmithing and carpentry.

Perform grounds maintenance duties.

Operate and maintain equipment and tools safely and skillfully.

Read and write at a level necessary to perform the duties of the position. Work from blueprints, shop drawings, schematics and sketches.

Meet the physical requirements of the job. Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Train and provide work direction to others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of experience in one or more of the repair, maintenance and construction fields such as electrical, plumbing, locksmithing and carpentry.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver's license, evidence of appropriate automobile insurance based on DMV regulations and insurable by the District liability insurance carrier.
