Consultant, Emerging Markets Underwriting

Job Description Key Responsibilities Drive the sales and underwriting relationship for Programs products and services. Provide input and data to help drive and implement strategic underwriting plans, business forecasting, and profitability within Program verticals. Responsible for achieving established goals for assigned programs. Analyze program manager relationships/results and recommend corrective actions if necessary. Understand business needs and identify new business opportunities. Review highly complex individual risks, programs, or referrals within assigned territory and decline or accept business based upon necessary information. Act as a subject matter expert in analyzing exposures to losses, developing adequate premium charge, and determining appropriate endorsements and exclusions. Actively engage in discussions with re‑insurers per department guidelines, verify appropriate use of reinsurance facilities, compile data for reinsurer presentations, and maintain a good working relationship with re‑insurers. Develop and implement underwriting guidelines, rates, forms, product endorsements, and procedures. Assist in the development of departmental policies and underwriting and standard methodologies. Interact with various business partners (claims, actuary, compliance, etc.) to achieve company goals and objectives. Act as an internal consultant responsible for resolving escalated issues and communicating to business liaisons and external sources regarding program initiatives. Conduct audits of individual risks/programs for compliance with company guidelines, state regulations, and reinsurance conditions. Develop and implement action plans, and resolve advanced complex technical issues. Independently establish and maintain effective relationships with Program Managers to generate growth and profitability, including marketing visits and entertainment of Program Managers for profitable business. Lead the implementation of all new programs, from underwriting guidelines and form/rate filings to compliance, finance, reinsurance, claims, legal, accounting, actuarial, and marketing matters. Attend industry functions to promote E&S/S Programs brand and capabilities and identify new program business opportunities. Act as a resource for direction, training, and guidance for less experienced staff and may be responsible for underwriting and support staff. Maintain knowledge of insurance regulations; provide consulting regarding legislation that impacts the organization. Typical Skills and Experiences Education : Undergraduate studies with a focus in Finance, Accounting, Economics, and/or Risk Management. Graduate degree preferred. Experience : Typically five or more years of related experience as a Professional, Financial, or Specialty lines underwriter. Program leadership experience in professional lines of business is preferred. Experience in data management, imaging, and procedures is helpful. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills : Demonstrated knowledge of Professional, Financial, and/or Specialty lines underwriting policies, practices and procedures, insurance law and underwriting marketing principles. Strong understanding of financial documents, financial analysis, investments, and market conditions. Legal knowledge related to insurance, contract and business law preferred. Understanding of employment principles and practices. Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with internal and external partners at all levels. Ability to influence and negotiate with internal and external partners. Ability to manage large programs; develop and apply innovative approaches to program initiatives and problem solutions. Proven ability to analyze and interpret mathematical, statistical and logical data, and evaluate its reliability and significance. Project and process management skills. Ability to evaluate, analyze and devise solutions to complex programs, implement the most appropriate solution and monitor its effectiveness. Ability to support numerous internal and external partners and make decisions that reflect the company’s financial and ethical goals. Ability to lead, train, motivate employees and set work priorities. Ability to apply/learn job‑related software. Values Regularly and consistently demonstrates Nationwide Values.
