TITLE: Senior Accountant - Property REPORTS TO: Associate Director of Accounting-Property Management DEPARTMENT: Accounting STATUS: Full-Time FLSA STATUS: Exempt WAGE RANGE: $95,347 - $103,760 annually GRANT FUNDED: No UNION POSITION: Yes LOCATION: 145 Taylor Street, San Francisco CA 94102 SCHEDULE: Hybrid 3 days onsite, 2 Days remote Summary Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Property Accounting, the Senior Property Accountant is responsible for full-cycle accounting of a portfolio of properties. This includes all rental transactions, month-end closing, general ledger account analysis, reconciling interfund accounts, reconciling bank accounts, performing internal audits, preparing audit schedules and other related accounting duties of the organization. Essential Duties Financial Operations & Reporting Perform full-cycle accounting for a portfolio of properties, including all revenue, expense, and general ledger activities Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and variance analyses Complete month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring adherence to established deadlines and reconciling schedules Prepare and submit required financial reports to lenders, regulatory agencies, and other external stakeholders Accounts Receivable & Tenant Accounting Oversee accounts receivable functions, including tenant billing, subsidy postings, and rent collections Reconcile tenant sub-ledgers and ensure alignment with the general ledger Review and post rent payments, including electronic and check-based transactions (e.g., Yardi Checkscan) Monitor tenant accounts and aging reports; research and resolve discrepancies Track resident move-outs and ensure accurate, timely processing of security deposit refunds in compliance with regulations Reconciliations & General Ledger Management Prepare and review monthly bank reconciliations and resolve outstanding items Reconcile all general ledger accounts, including intercompany/interfund accounts, on a monthly basis Prepare and post journal entries with clear documentation and audit trails Ensure financial data integrity across systems and reports Compliance, Controls & Audits Ensure compliance with internal policies, procedures, and internal controls, as well as affordable housing regulations (e.g., LIHTC, HUD, or other applicable programs) Perform periodic internal audits to assess accuracy and compliance Prepare audit schedules and support external auditors during annual audits Ensure internal financial statements align with audited financial statements Collaboration & Cross-Functional Support Partner with Property Management and Leasing teams to ensure accurate rent rolls, occupancy data, and billing Produce and present financial statements and other key reports to Housing Development team for new properties Collaborate with Asset Management on financial performance, budgets, and operational insights Provide financial data and support for grant reporting, lender compliance, and regulatory submissions Serve as a key accounting liaison to Property Management and provide guidance or training on financial systems (e.g., Yardi) Cash Management & Analysis Monitor property-level cash flow and ensure proper recording of intercompany transactions Assist in identifying cash needs, funding requests, and operational variances Support budget tracking and financial performance analysis Other Responsibilities Contribute to process improvements and system efficiencies within the accounting function Maintain organized and complete financial records and documentation Qualifications Required Skills Knowledge and skills Proven ability to follow directions and work independently. Proven ability to efficiently reconcile balance sheet accounts. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to create various financial reports, identify unusual activities and propose corrections. Proven ability to prepare PBC audit schedules efficiently Proven ability to problem solve complex issues with limited information Knowledge of double–entry accounting, financial statement preparation and account analysis Strong understanding of monthly close procedures Physical Requirements Ability to operate office equipment such as personal computers and calculators. Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, and fingers in performing word processing, writing, reading, and similar tasks. Ability to lift 15-20 pounds. Visual acuity is necessary to review documents. Hearing acuity sufficient to use telephone and communicate with tenants, and staff. Ability to perform sedentary to light physical work involves sitting most of the time. Environmental Adaptability Ability to work in an office environment. Ability to travel to various work sites as needed. Mathematical Ability Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and calculate decimals, ratios, percentages, and fractions. Ability to calculate weights and measures. Language and Communication Ability Ability to comprehend and correctly use informational documents including Ability to communicate effectively with residents, coworkers and staff at all levels, residents, government officials, both verbally and in writing. Ability to keep abreast of changes in policy, regulations, methods, operations, etc. as they apply to compliance and occupancy procedures and activities. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance 3-4 years’ accounting experience, preferrable in property or affordable housing accounting. Strong understanding of General Accepted Accounting Principles Prior experience as key contributor preparing audits Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of residential property management, building, systems, and housing quality standards. Knowledge of Asset Management functions Knowledge of Tax Credit, HUD, SFHA Knowledge of report writing Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Yardi Voyager (or similar property management/accounting software) Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
