This recruitment is for lateral, academy graduates or students currently enrolled in a POST Basic Police Academy (including Modular Level 1). If you have not attended a POST academy (Basic Course or Modular Level 1) or completed the Basic Course Waiver process, you will NOT be considered for this recruitment. The form can be found at: Responsibilities Under general supervision to perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; to conduct and participate in general investigations of crimes, accidents, and cases involving public morals and welfare; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; and to perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of that Department. Patrol a designated area of the City to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes; enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; check building for physical security. Respond to general public service calls and complaints including domestic disturbances, civil complaints, property control, automobile accidents, robberies, related misdemeanors and felony incidents. Collect, process, photograph, and present evidence including fingerprints, fibers, blood, and related physical evidence. Enforce traffic laws and ordinances, check speed with radar, issue warnings and citations. Direct traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency or congested situations. Conduct traffic accident analyses and general traffic surveys; conduct investigations of serious injury and fatality traffic accidents. Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigations of offenses. Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public; take an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention. Prepare reports on arrests made, activities performed and unusual incidents observed. Serve writs, warrants, and subpoenas within the department and with outside agencies; remain current on laws and procedures required for processing. Investigate crimes; gather and preserve evidence; interview victims, complaints and witnesses; identify and interrogate suspects; apprehend and arrest offenders; testify and present evidence in court. May serve as Field Training Officer as assigned; train new officers on departmental policies, procedures and activities. May conduct a variety of criminal investigations involving crimes against persons and property, child sexual and physical abuse, auto theft, white‑collar crime, and narcotics; conduct covert and undercover investigations as assigned; gather evidence and prepare cases for prosecution. May serve as Intelligence Officer, gather crime‑related intelligence information and conduct background investigations; coordinate information and activities with outside agencies and jurisdiction. May serve as Police Sergeant as assigned; act as Watch Commander; review and approve the reports of other Police Officers. Skills Learn to operate firearms and other modern police equipment. Learn to operate modern office equipment including computer equipment. Operate a motor vehicle. Abilities Successfully complete P.O.S.T. training entry level for Police Officers. Learn modern police methods procedures related to patrol, traffic control, and investigation and identifications. Learn law enforcement theory, principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of services and programs. Learn recent court decisions and how they affect department and division operations. Learn functions and objectives and Federal, State, and other local enforcement agencies. Learn self‑defense tactics. Learn, properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations. Learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances, particularly with reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, evidence and records maintenance, and traffic control. Learn modern investigative methods including interviewing and interrogation techniques. Learn to gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate and use facts and evidence. Learn, interpret and explain City and Department policies and procedures. Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places. Prepare clear, accurate and grammatically correct written reports. Analyze situations quickly and objectively, and determine proper course of action. Act quickly and calmly in emergencies. Meet and deal with the public tactfully and effectively. Meet the first aid requirement as prescribed by the State of California and administer first aid. Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Experience and Training Guidelines Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. One year of experience working with the public. Equivalence to completion of the twelfth grade and completion of a POST Academy (currently enrolled students may apply but can only be appointed upon successful completion of a POST Academy). Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 100 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, electrical hazards, dust, mechanical hazards, explosive materials and contagious diseases; availability for shift work, work on‑call, and stand‑by call. #J-18808-Ljbffr
