Join the City of San Ramon Aquatics Team and make a splash in your community! As a Senior Lifeguard, you'll play an important leadership role in keeping our aquatic facilities safe, welcoming, and running smoothly. You'll help lead daily operations at the San Ramon Olympic Pool & Aquatic Park and Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center, while supporting a variety of programs and activities.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Ensuring safety and supervising patrons
  • Providing leadership and support to lifeguard staff
  • Supporting swim lessons and water safety programs
  • Assisting with recreational swim and aquatics summer camps
  • Helping with staff training and development
  • Supporting daily facility and program operations

During the busy summer season, Senior Lifeguards may work up to 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekends.

Typical duties include:

  • Supervising and ensuring patron safety at all times, including clearly and professionally conveying rules to patrons and enforcing facility regulations
  • Performing rescues involving the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force to move objects and retrieval of heavy items from 14' of depth
  • Sitting and/or standing for long periods of time
  • Administering first aid and providing emergency care as required
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions and with exposure to pool chemicals
  • Maintaining a safe aquatic environment
  • Greeting the public and responding to questions and inquiries
  • Assisting the Swim Lesson program
  • Assisting with cleaning and routine maintenance of the aquatic park, including locker rooms, guard office, and pool surfaces
  • Maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor by wearing appropriate uniform or attire for the position and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm
  • Displaying the ability to swim and tread water; keeping records and reports
  • Facilitating program activities according to a prepared curriculum
  • Providing feedback regarding the City's aquatic program and activity schedules to the participants or supervisors
  • Conducting proper opening and closing procedures of the aquatic facilities
  • Assisting in staff trainings and meetings
  • Analyzing program needs and recommending new and innovative program ideas
  • Setting up proper furniture arrangements, equipment, and facility maintenance
  • Working as a Lead with Lifeguards and Swim Instructors and offering assistance in maintaining the proper execution of all aspects of facility rentals and programs
  • Ensuring all policies of the City of San Ramon are followed during all programs, special events, and facility use
  • Providing excellent customer service and problem solving
  • Performing functions of registration software applications
  • Preparing daily deposits and reconciling daily reports
  • Ensuring all revenues received at assigned sites are properly entered and accounted for
  • Leading staff during facility rentals and Lap Swim
  • Assisting the Pool Manager with Recreation Swim, and the Junior Lifeguard and Star Guard camps

Knowledge of:

  • Rules and procedures for operating the assigned facility.
  • Basic recreation program concepts and design.
  • Customer service practices.
  • Goals, requirements, and practices related to City aquatic programs.
  • Current aquatic safety standards and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Safely operate assigned program equipment.
  • Swim and tread water and perform water rescues, including moving objects requiring up to 100 pounds of force.
  • Retrieve heavy objects from a depth of up to 14 feet.
  • Set up and maintain program equipment and activity areas.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and respond appropriately to direction.
  • Manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Work professionally, reliably, and responsibly.
  • Demonstrate creativity, dependability, and enthusiasm for the job.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Must be a minimum of 17 years old and at least 480 hours of experience as a certified lifeguard or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting and documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years are required.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Possession of at least one instructor level certification in Lifeguarding, Water Safety, or other related areas
  • Previous experience as a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is preferred
  • Current American Red Cross certifications or the equivalent Lifeguard Training and First Aid, CPR/AED for Lifeguards

Other requirements:

  • Appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting.
  • Documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
